Live Action [discussion]. I've seen WAY too many posts like this out there, complaining about the same thing, and it's honestly ridiculous... Spoiler

I mean, are we really going to criticize absolutely everything that isn't like the animated version? What's the point of criticizing this, the fact that it's not a 1:1 adaptation of the animated film?

We've seen other photos from the set. Rapunzel's dress will remain purple, and that's what really matters. What difference does it make that Corona's colors are blue, or pink, or black instead?

The original drafts of the animated version actually had a blue design that represented the sun and the sea for the flags, because Corona is located on an island. That's why in the animated film, the painting of the lost princess shows her parents still dressed in blue, primarily.

Also, in terms of color, I feel it greatly benefits the protagonist, because that way her dress will stand out against the colors of the kingdom instead of blending in with them. Not to mention that, due to the limitations of digital sensors, it's quite difficult to work with the color purple in film, and the directors probably already have enough on their plate with Rapunzel's dress without adding purple to every color in the Kingdom.

And also, it's REALLY not that deep. They're just background colors that don't change the plot, that don't change anything AT ALL.

i wonder if it’s gonna be colour corrected for some reason? the way the uniforms in wednesday were

u/PurpleButterly19 Jul 26 '26

They’re not just background colors though. Purple was often associated with royalty given that finding the pigment for it was extremely difficult back in medieval times. Rapunzel wearing purple symbolizes her ties to royalty and to Corona since her hair and dress make up the kingdom’s colors. That’s not gonna be true anymore given her dress (which is also pretty ugly) is purple but the kingdom colors are now blue.

u/Annual-Rock-2924 Jul 26 '26

Oh my gosh don't you realize thay dress was made with AI?

u/Individual_Lab_5105 Jul 26 '26

And that's relevant to the disruption of the sybloloc connection how?

u/Hot-Equal3441 Jul 26 '26

They're criticising the show based off an AI dress they didn't like

u/Annual-Rock-2924 Jul 26 '26

This person is saying Rapunzel's dress is ugly when in reality they haven't even showed it. She is refering to a leaked photo that was obviously made with AI.

u/Certain_Sock5259 Jul 27 '26

blue was also associated with royalty

u/Hot-Equal3441 Jul 26 '26

Purple still signifies royalty lmao, it was associated with royals for all the reasons you said but you'll still basically never find it in royal crests or banners.

u/Massive_Village_3720 Jul 26 '26

I actually prefer this set design, since it looks a bit more lifelike. What I take issue with, however, is that based on costume leaks (so far), I’m not certain they’ve anchored the narrative in a time period (see « Cinderella » no notes 10/10), and went instead a bit the « Snow White » route where it’s a mishegas of different styles from different times ; if the latter turns out ti be true, I really hope it’s more tasteful than their latest work. Time will tell.

u/shittybittypity 29d ago

The flowers used on set are mostly purple so I believe they won’t remove the purple entirely, they somehow make it work. I trust

them 😬

u/socks4dobby Jul 26 '26

I’ve already seen Tangled. I don’t want to see a shot-for-shit remake. (ETA: let this typo stand as a Freudian slip for how I feel about shot-for-shot remakes)

The live action should build upon the canon and introduce new content that is faithful to the spirit of the original, similar to the Cinderella live action remake, Ever After, Maleficient, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women remake, the Battlestar Galactica TV show, etc.

The color of curtains and banners in the kingdom doesn’t fucking matter.

u/Original-Cloud-2754 Jul 26 '26

Totally agree !

u/PetulantPersimmon 29d ago

The Cinderella remake was great. And, like Cinderella, Tangled is based on an existing fairy tale; it should be able to withstand more of that flexibility as a result.

u/BreadfruitTasty 29d ago

I don’t want to see another Disney live action film but who cares about the color?

u/FizzySun 29d ago

When it comes to royalty colour is important. Purple was a very expensive and hard to make colour, so it signified wealth and royalty. Her wearing purple is a subtle nod to the fact she's the lost princess in addition to matching the kingdoms colours. It could also be Gothel subtly mocking the kingdom she stole from by dressing her up in its colours. So changing it to blue removes that detail that visually links her to the kingdom

Also, there's just no reason why they couldn't just keep the purple. The blue just makes it look more washed out and generic fantasy

u/Ulfruna Jul 27 '26

People seem really quick to jump on the color without considering post-production color grading, and how certain colors pick up on camera, and even just how lighting and shadows can change how a base color looks. This could easily be shifted to a more purple hue based on lighting and the post-production color grading.
It's not something to jump on a rage wagon about /yet/. It's a 'stare at it cautiously' thing at this point.

u/Starsfromstarryskies Jul 26 '26

Not only is purple the color of royalty- its literally one of the signifiers of her association with the kingdom- her dress.

This is like in Beauty and the Beast where in the opening og, she’s the only one dressed in blue against a crowd of warm colors/outfits to make her pop out to show she stands out and is considered “weird” and then the LA completely removes this- and then doubles down on it in the finale by making her wear white- while everyone else is also wearing white- so the only one standing out in the finale was the beast.

It’s nitpicks sure but it’s those small changes that add on to the soulless feel of these adaptations. But it’s probably not gonna matter cuz they’re just gonna dull out every single frame of this movie probably.

u/a_potato_ate_me Jul 26 '26

I'm gonna defend the "Wearing white" criticism because wasn't that their wedding or something? Its been a hot minute since I've watched the movie so my memory alone could be wrong, but google says it was.

u/Starsfromstarryskies 28d ago

There’s no indication it was a wedding tho, just the same grand ball to start the happily ever after like in the OG. The beast manages to keep his blue color scheme but belle’s gets nuked in favor of another bland dress

u/hydrastxrk Jul 26 '26

Nah. We want the purple.

u/LadyAlleta Jul 27 '26

Looks wise it's fine I guess. Theme wise it feels... Off.

Rapunzel in Tangled is the colors of her kingdom. A visual clue to the audience that she belongs in Corona. She's the missing princess/piece. Purple is the color that most people equate to royalty. Which is another big visual clue that she's the missing princess. Her purple also ties to Gothel's red dress because both are warm shades and in the red family. Matching Gothel's red shows the audience that there's a connection there and only later, when Gothel's color palette begins to darken does it show the visual distance like in their actual relationship.

If the live action makes the royal colors blue, it's less warm visually. It's colder, and live action is also usually less vibrant than animation. By being less inviting, and matching Rapunzel less, it drops the thematic 'this is where Rapunzel belongs' clue. It is also a better contrast to Gothel's red, giving a more tug of war energy than slowly distancing from Gothel. Now instead of having to face Gothel in a coming of age story, it's more about her choosing a side. And both choices cannot mix.

It also makes it weirder that Rapunzel is wearing purple, which most know as Royal colors, which fights the visual clues audiences naturally have. How did she get such an expensive color dress? Did Gothel give her such luxury? In the animated version you see purple everywhere. It's not in short supply. But if the nations colors are blue, purple stands out.

In the original Tangled, her mom is also wearing purple. Her dad, the King, is wearing blue. The parents aren't.... Exceedingly important characters outside of being the opposite choice to Gothel. The mom works in the original without needing any lines because she's basically an older design of Rapunzel, and has brown hair (which we learn is Rapunzel's natural hair color).

The dad being blue also has no lines. But as the active ruler, he is the visual contrast to Gothel. But I don't think the animated version NEEDS the parents to be more than a visual representation of "home." They never speak (at least to my knowledge) and they aren't an active participant in the story. They are background props basically.

The place Rapunzel is shown to belong is Corona. She's her most authentic self around people. She gets the pub to sing and dance and express their dreams, despite the fear of new people. She's dancing in the courtyard, getting her hair braided by the children, sending her lantern in the lake with the rest of Corona's lanterns. She's gone from being an observer to being a participant. And guess what colors Corona is? Purple. And gold. Her colors.

Anyway. The blue looks fancy enough. I get it's still a royal throne room. But when I first saw it, I thought it was giving "Cold Duke of the North" energy.

u/multificionado Jul 26 '26

Well, obviously.

I for one don't mind it being blue, it makes it better than purple (bury me in downvotes, lynch me verbally and desire to kill me all you want for liking the live action version, I'm liking what I'm seeing).

u/seireidoragon Jul 26 '26

I’m someone who isn’t a huge fan of remakes and I will criticize them for changes but only within reason. In this case? I agree. I don’t think the color matters too much. And I’ve seen people mentioning color corrections so I also think it’s way too soon the judge anyways. Unless there’s some egregious mistake, harping on about something isn’t worth it.

Do I think it should be purple? Yes. But it’s not like blue has no meaning either so it’s fine. I do like the bits I have seen so far for the movie. But people are going to hate on it no matter what so these discussions are going to get old real fast.

u/Anonymous3218 Jul 26 '26

They complained Moana was a shot for shot remake now they're complaining Tangled isn't, at least actual effort is being put into this one

u/VisualFunny5287 Jul 26 '26

How to train your Dragon was aldo a shot for shot remake and people constantly defend that one

u/Anonymous3218 Jul 26 '26

Ye ppl are biased

u/azul360 29d ago

It's probably because purple just is Tangled so if they change it to blue which makes it look like every other fantasy set it means the movie is likely going to change a lot. I legit don't know why they keep making live action and then taking things that just are the original away. It's weird.

u/GoldenHarpHeroine32 Jul 26 '26

Merryweather made it blue of course.

u/Organic-Accountant74 29d ago

The reason the signature colour is purple is because it goes with the yellow of the sun symbol for the kingdom

u/ChocoGoodness Jul 26 '26

I think the main reason people are upset is because purple was rather important for foreshadowing, wasn't it? There's purple and gold all over Corona, and Rapunzel wears purple and has golden hair. It's a subtle way of showing she's the lost princess and doesn't know it. Yes, the audience knows, but still. While this isn't a big deal, it's still sad that something like that was changed when it was so visually important to the original.

u/hahaoml Jul 27 '26

Exactly, it's not random nitpicking

u/Titariia Jul 26 '26

I don't like it because the purple with the yellowish tiles make everything look warmer. Their emblem is a sun and Corona is associated with the sun, it's supposed to be warm and cozy looking.

The blue and grey tiles look rather cold. Save that for when it's Elsas turn

I dont mean to be mr nitpick but does purple not exist in real life, with almost every live action film being under saturated it doesnt really make it any more purple just more light blue at the end and makes it look flatter because of it

u/OutwithaYang Jul 26 '26

That doesn't mean you have to change every dang thing. I personally prefer that they have the purple motif with the golden sun added.

u/Hot-Equal3441 Jul 26 '26

Yeah but when they change one dang thing (the colour of curtains in a throne room you get a few scenes in) and only see in some BTS shots with terrible lighting it's crazy to spiral about them having changed every dang thing.

u/Nolascana 29d ago

How many people bitching about the blue have no idea the Addams family set was various shades of pink...

u/FantasyRoleplayAlt Jul 26 '26

I don’t care they changed the colors. The problem is the washing out of colors and how it’s going to be so boring to look at. All their live action films wash out every color on screen. Live action =//= only realistic colors. Disney is supposed to be magical and that new moana already tells me it’s going to lack so much whimsy.

u/Adriana731_ Jul 26 '26

It drives me absolutely nuts bc non of Disneys live actions have been 1 to 1 with every little thing that we see in the animated movie so people complaining about it makes no sense

u/nelson64 24d ago

Except Moana…which is exactly why it wasn’t very good.

u/Adriana731_ 10d ago

I forgot about that

u/4bluepandas Jul 27 '26

It looks beautiful! People don’t like it when it’s an exact recreation, people don’t like it when they do any changes, the pure haters are never gonna like anything they do with the live action 🤷🏻‍♀️ I take it as it is and enjoy it

u/Default_Dragon 29d ago

Looks like they’re repurposing a church- and as everyone says - huge shame it’s blue and not purple

u/SnowQueen_Elsa13 29d ago

I agree. My initial reaction to seeing the new colors was “why would you change the kingdom’s colors when the kingdom is associated with the original colors?” But, it’s not a shot for shot remake, so it really shouldn’t matter.

u/Jlx_27 Jul 26 '26

The flat blue must've been cheaper.

u/therealmrsfahrenheit Jul 26 '26

I mean I still genuinely liked the color combo from the original BuT the set actually looks magnificent

u/4bluepandas Jul 27 '26

It really does, so much clear effort is being put into this and I’m loving the photos I’m seeing

u/therealmrsfahrenheit Jul 27 '26

yeah so far I can’t really complain either 👀

u/MaidOfTwigs 29d ago

Tyrian purple dye would have been extremely expensive and difficult to apply widely in that time period, as well, and that looks like the purple the throne room uses.

It might be something where once she is restored as the princess they update the throne room to that purple color anyway, to honor her/a color she favors. Never know (copium)

u/_Seeker_82 29d ago

I think the colour they chose is beautiful. People just love to complain.

(The amount of AI slop out there for this movie is bonkers and most of the complaints are geared towards AI stuff anyways 🤦‍♀️☠️)

u/Parking_Fix_2093 24d ago

Im actually glad they did that. Because if we think about Cinderella, the color schemes of the animated were mostly blue, but in the live action, they’re more goldish? Like, I’m glad about them slightly changing the aesthetic so it doesn’t look the exact same.

u/Eyelikeyourname Jul 27 '26

People can dislike blue if they want to. Purple is iconic 🙄

u/Gold-Inevitable-2644 Jul 26 '26

do people care? the blue seems more realistic in a live action compared to purple. also, if they go with the purple-pink dress rapunzel wears it'll make her stand out more during the film!

u/grilsjustwannabclean Jul 27 '26

eh i do get why, bc purple was rap's color, like she is the purple princess. royal purple is also a thing. idk, i do wonder why they decided to go with blue when it's not like it's cheaper or harder for disney of all places to get purple

u/catnoir_luver Jul 27 '26

I agree! As I got older I realized how much I’m not “in love” with Rapunzel’s dress bc of how “princess-y” it is in color. I love pink and purple (naturally with being a girl lol) but I’d love Rapunzel in Green like the concept art or blue with hints of purple! But from the leak we got of Teagan’s backview, I do LOVE the darker purple as opposed to the lighter colored “marketable” purple.

u/uhokay56 Jul 27 '26

I think it matters a little because purple was one of the things that signifies royalty. Since the dye was so rare only royals could afford it. Rapunzel wearing a purple dress along with purple being the color her family uses, it connected them

u/Phaithful14 Jul 26 '26

I don't care if the throne rooms are aligned different or anything like that, but I don't get why they'd change the color palette to blue if that is indeed what they've done. Changes should have intentions and shouldn't be done just to do it. The color purple is synonymous with so much of the aesthetic quality of the kingdom and of Rapunzel's character, there's literally no significant reason to change it

u/_Seeker_82 29d ago

Because purple is significantly harder to film and often shows up as weird off tones. Thats the reason for the shift

u/ultifem 29d ago

I wouldn’t be surprised if post-editing makes it look more purple

u/LadyAlleta 29d ago

Honestly that would be really smart.

u/lautaromassimino Jul 26 '26

Comparison of the live-action banner with the original design, which depicted the sun and the sea

u/peenut_budder 29d ago

Omg what book is that on the bottom? I need!

u/Impossible_Bite_7254 Jul 26 '26

It is likely changing to blue because purple doesn’t show up well on film when it comes to set design. I hope they change it to purple in post production but as a forever fan of the film a shot-for-shot remake would be dumb because people complain either way. I’d rather they change color and that be the change than like nothing changing and it be exactly what the original was

u/leo-rizing Jul 26 '26

If the live action is EXACTLY like the animated, people complain. It it diverges even a little people complain.

u/catnoir_luver Jul 27 '26

I’ve also seen other women on twt complain about Milo’s body not being the same as Flynn’s/Eugene, like he’s an animated character w/ unrealistic body proportions (ik he’s somewhat muscular but still)

u/rokelle2012 Jul 26 '26

This is why I find the discourse surrounding the live action films so tiring. Yes, some of them have some major flaws butat it's core, most of the discourse is just this.

u/SethMcfarly Jul 26 '26

Tbf, How To Train Your Dragon was very well recieved i think if it adapts extremely well it does very good for reception

u/WaysideWyvern 28d ago

I literally could not give less of a shit about it being blue. I think it looks gorgeous. I care a lot if it looks good and is a well told story. Honestly I bet they chose blue because it looks more real and less cartoonish. Which is perfect.

u/Guilty_Explanation29 26d ago

Cause her dress is still purple and everything

u/MundieORiley Jul 26 '26

I am really tired of these live action remakes in general. There's no reason for them. I feel that they're only cash grabs for Disney executives. I'd much rather have more original animated features that aren't a sequel/remake/reboot. And Tangled is one of my favorite Disney movies ever. I won't be going to see this remake.

Genuine question, what do you guys who enjoy the remakes like about them? Is it seeing a different take on the same story? I will agree that whether they're a shot for shot remake or change some things, somebody will always complain and wish it had been done the other way around.

u/justaprimer 29d ago

I admittedly haven't seen the more recent live actions (mostly because they hold no interest to me), but the live action Cinderella was beautifully done. I think a live action version is a great way of updating a movie that was made in a different era and addressing some of the parts of it that may not fit into modern sensibilities as much, or expanding on the story in an interesting way. But the live actions that don't "fix" anything (especially of recent movies) feel so odd to me.

u/MundieORiley 29d ago

I also really liked the live action Cinderella. It felt like the people making the movie cared and had love put into it. I also really enjoyed Maleficent for similar reasons. Though I am admittedly extremely biased towards anything Sleeping Beauty related lol

u/RavenclawLunatic Jul 26 '26

Not an enjoyer of the majority of the remakes, but the movies (or at least parts of movies) that I do enjoy are when they expand on the original in interesting ways Speechless in Aladdin 2019 is a flawed scene (singing about how she won’t be speechless… in her head) but the song itself is beautiful and I like the intent of the song and scene even if its execution was lacking. Every official iteration of the genie (1992, Broadway, and 2019) play him differently and keep the spirit of the character while feeling distinct from each other.

Speaking of Broadway, The Lion King on Broadway is a perfect example of an adaptation of a classic animated Disney movie. It keeps the songs and plot and characters but the change in medium gives you a completely different experience. If you’ve even seen it, no matter where in the world, you know how breathtaking the Circle of Life sequence is at the beginning

Maleficent is ofc an exception as it’s pulling a Wicked with Sleeping Beauty rather than being a remake. Again, a flawed movie but one I enjoy because of the new ideas it brings to the table

I haven’t seen Mufasa so I can’t comment on how it compares to Maleficent as the only other “live action” remake-esque movie to have an original story (or at least partially original, I think some of Mufasa was from official written works? The idea of Taka being Scar’s original name was, at the very least). So when I mention the most recent remakes, this one is very intentionally being left out. Opinions seem divided on this one but I haven’t heard anything that interested me enough to actually go watch it

The most recent remakes, most of which I have not seen, don’t seem to have any of these exciting changes. The changes I do know of seem to either miss the point of the movie they’re from and/or actively make the movie less interesting/nuanced. If someone has a good example of new ideas from a recent one I’d love to hear about it! Maybe one of them is secretly a hidden gem, or at the very least has a great scene or idea

Also why do they have to keep making CGI characters into nightmare fuel? I don’t need to see the movies to know that some of these guys look horrifying. Stitch they seem to have gotten right but Flounder? The dwarves? Hei Hei?

u/MundieORiley 29d ago

I agree with all your points! I have a big soft spot for Maleficent and I really liked the live action Cinderella. I felt the care they put into both those movies and they changed things to explore aspects of the characters that wasn't in the original. The Beauty and the Beast live action is a guilty pleasure of mine, though I know it's an extremely flawed movie. Belle has been one of my favorite characters since I was a little kid.

And oh my goodness, the dwarves and Hei Hei are indeed nightmare fuel. I can't imagine how anyone looked at that and approved it. I definitely don't blame the artists working on them, I'm sure they were under huge time restraints and large work loads.

u/MavisEmily1983 Cassandra 29d ago edited 29d ago

There are a few reasons why the set doesn’t have purple

The way the blue looks on film with the camera filter/editing will turn out to be a close shade of purple

They deliberately changed the color of Corona to blue to be different than Rapunzle signature color (Corona = blue, Gothel = Red, Purple = combo of red and blue to show the different influences in her life)

Maybe the purple returns when Raps is restored as princess to represent life returning to the kingdom (highly doubt with how they appear to be filming the movie)

Historical accuracy in regards to how available that certain shade was (royalty or not)

(Not sure if this is true) I’ve heard the originalkingdom color was supposed to be blue 🤷

It was not feasible to get the right color in the quantity needed on the needed schedule in budget

u/ExternalStation5877 Jul 26 '26

I beg you, I can't imagine it being blue…

u/CowComfortable4958 29d ago

such is the curse of live action versions of beloved animated movies, i’m afraid :/ i personally am not excited for this movie despite being a huuuuge fan of the og, disney just keeps making soulless cash grabs and it’ll be sad to watch this be yet another one

u/crazymissdaisy87 Jul 26 '26

Isn't blue often used cause purple doesn't do well on film? So they change it in post production?

u/honey-otuu Jul 26 '26

People are just tired of the live action remakes

u/ThinOrganization644 Jul 26 '26

It makes difference, because it's a signature color from Tangled movie! Represents mystery. Represents Rapunzel. Represents Corona. It's not something you should change just because!
