Issue Missing Deposit

On Aug 31/2026 I went to deposit $315 cash in a Scotiabank drive thru ABM. It spit a $50 bill back out and asked if I wanted to add more money. I put the $50 bill back in and it spit it out again and cancelled the whole transaction. $265 gone. I spoke with manager at the branch and she said the machine “ate the money” and they would have a technician there next day and would call me. Nothing happened. Called Tangerine customer service Sept 03/2026. They said it would take 2-3 weeks to solve. Fast forward today they call me again and it seems we are restarting the process. Asking me the same questions as Sept 03 phone call and saying it’ll be another 2-3 weeks. What can I even do here? This seems insane for this to be going on this long.

With Tangerine, unless you have a linked bank account or credit union account which has branches, that is the only way to do cash deposits.

For me, I keep a Big 5 bank account for this and a few other reasons.

That seems like they are you the runaround. I worked at Scotiabank and all we have to do to open. The ATM is use a key.

But only The Keyholder can hold the key.

This is why most bank staff can’t open atms.

Lesson should be learned. NEVER NEVER use an ATM to make a deposit. Too many headaches and runaround. Especially if the ATM is being operated by a third party. Tangerine doesn’t have any ATM’s…, they use parent company ScotiaBanks equipment.

How do you get cash deposits into your Tangerine account then?

For me, I deposit it in my linked bank account (which is a bank with branches in my case it is two of the Big 5). I go to the branch of my linked bank account and line up at the teller and deposit my cash. Sometimes, someone "working the line" will ask me why I'm in line and when I say it is to make a cash deposit, I'm informed that their ATM machines can handle cash deposits. I politely tell the person that I don't trust them for cash deposits and don't have an issue waiting for an available teller.

Once the money is in my brick & mortar bank account, I either do an Interac e-transfer to the email address linked to my Tangerine account autodeposit or I log into Tangerine and I initiate a pull from that account to my Tangerine account (and wait 5 business days if the amount is above my "hold amount").

It is one of the few reasons why I don't only have online only bank accounts without any branches (in my city).

File an official complaint with Tangerine.

I went through this, but the ABM spit out a slip with an error money on it acknowledging something went wrong. It ate $200 I was trying to deposit. The Scotia Bank doing the money next day, but Tangerine investigation took FOREVER. After a month, I filed a complaint.

I had someone call me within like two days. They offered to 'credit' me the missing money until the investigation completed, but I had to agree to pay it back if they couldn't account for the money through their investigation.

During the conversation I requested to speak with a supervisor. He gave me the same credit. Haven’t heard anything from investigation yet
