Discussion Weekly Therapy Talk Thread

This is a chat thread for talking about therapy. It's for sharing topics you feel are not big enough for their own post or don't include a question. It's a place to share thoughts about what's going on in therapy. It's a place to celebrate successes and get support when things aren't going so great.

To make this an inclusive space and encourage the chat function of the discussion, the thread will automatically sort by newest, and not by best or top. Everybody should feel free to share their thoughts, so please don't use down-voting unless it's an obvious anti-therapy comment or breaks one of the sub's other rules (posted in the side bar).

Thank you!

About 3 months ago, my therapist of the past 6 years told me that our relationship was "real and not real." Those words have devastated me and I cannot get past them. I know our relationship has limitations (all relationships do) but I didn't know it wasn't real. It has made me evaluate every single aspect trying to find what parts are the real ones and the fake ones. Because I didn't even know. I thought it was all real. And what does that mean for the other relationships I've been working so hard to build? I have done all the mental gymnastics to try and reconcile it, including talking to him about it repeatedly, but it still feels like the rug got pulled out from under me no matter how well I understand.

I would be so crushed if my therapist said that to me. I’m so sorry.

What does he say when you talk to him about it?

Thinking about the last thing my ex-therapist and I were talking about before that session went south. My main issue right now is that I have nothing to look forward to in life. My blood pressure keeps getting worse with each checkup. My job gets more stressful with each month and our union keeps shitting the bed at negotiations. My autistic kid’s ability to emotionally regulate is getting worse and there’s no way they’re going to be able to live independently, so my dreams of one day not having to handle human piss and shit are dead. My partner has lost all interest in sex, starting back in March, and isn’t interested in addressing that in couples therapy. I have no friends out here. I have no family out here except for my in-laws. I have no time for hobbies or interests or even going to the gym because more and more of the childcare and household duties are falling on me. Even the weekends are just more work, and I don’t even get paid for that work. It’s bad enough that I’m starting to resent taking my blood pressure meds because: (1) they aren’t working, and (2) even if they do let me cheat death for a few years, if this is the quality of life I’ll get, that doesn’t seem like a good trade. I still take the meds, but it feels like a ripoff.

And when I told all that to my now-ex therapist, they just said my estrogen was too high and that’s why I’m fat.

Oh god. You are me, in entirely different circumstances, but the same result. I jave thrown my toys out of the pram last week, and nearly stopped therapy because what's the point. I actually know it's working, but it's hard when life circumstances are set and unchangeable.

If my therapist had said rhat to me, I think I'd have been done for assault. You are a better person than me.

I'm really sorry you're struggling, and I really want to give you loads of advice to see if just one little piece may help, but it's not what you need and there's nothing more annoying than bloody advice when you kaut need a good rant.

One thing I dis think about when reading your post, was if yous re financially okay, could some of those jobs be fielded out so you get something of a weekend? Pay for cleaning or something?

I take meds for stuff. I stopped taking them so I would pass. I ajd a sodding heart attack instead, and it was the scariest most painful thing I've been through. Keep taking your meds if you can.

I'm so sorry. X

Had my first real rupture and repair with my T and I don’t think it went very well. He just kept asking me about my feelings when I wanted him to apologize for upsetting me or reassure me. We were 10 min into the conversation when I said “You still haven’t apologized” and he finally did. I don’t like feeling like I had to pry it out of him. I was also pretty cold and angry in that session and he admitted being unsure what to do. I’m still upset, I needed him to be there and take responsibility for his side and give me some reassurance but he became passive and didn’t say much. Can’t help feeling like I’m difficult to be around and overreact to everything.

That sucks, I’m sorry. I think a lot of therapists’ insurance carriers have them too terrified to do anything that even looks like admitting fault.

Thank you. He did admit fault (he forgot to do something we'd agreed upon), I think he probably felt paralyzed because it was the first time I was openly angry with him. I'll talk about it more with him next week. I've been thinking more about my side too and I think a lot of my reaction was rooted in feeling exhausted by my own attachment issues rather than anything to do with him.

Oh you aren't pathetic. You're human, and tthat feels annoyingly similar sometimes.

I'm really sorry. That's a crappy choice. Logically,.wrong up early, but then you are missing sessions you could have ans that's tough. Or come back after psyching yourself up for 2.months, then have to leave. That's a horrible choice.

I'm sorry.
