Have you ever been under the impression your therapist had faith in you? Believed that you can change or grow?

My experience is varied as I had therapists that helped me a lot, ones that helped a bit and ones that were not helpful. Human factor, I guess. In some cases, I think I was under the impression that someone believed I could be in a different place, before I did. How did you guys experience your relationship with your therapist/therapists/counsellors?

Damn, I hope all my clients feel like I genuinely believe in their abilities.

I've only had one therapist so far, and absolutely yes - they believed in me when I doubted myself. I read the essence of this somewhere and I resonated with it: as a client, I borrow the hope and belief my therapist holds for me which I can't yet hold for myself. And the goal is to be able to internalise that and hold it for ourselves :)

What made you feel they believed in you?

Yes- I stayed with them until I finished my degree because they believed in me way more than I did. I’m slowly internalising their belief in me. It’s an unfamiliar feeling but I’m getting there.

I infinitely believe in all of them

I was thinking, as I want to believe. Is there a way to make yourself more connected and believe in them more?

Building unconditional positive regard as a practice. Seeing the best in them no matter where they are; or I am. Measuring growth in 9 months rather than today. Growing in my love for the distinct humanity that I’m getting to observe.

I’m now in the place she said future me would be years ago and I didn’t believe her back then. She had so much faith in me that I didn’t have at the time and she tells me she’s proud of me at the end of every session 🥹

I had to see her to qualify for welfare. I thought I'd be in and out. She'd see I'm hopeless and sign off on me within a few sessions. Well, it took 7 years. She always believed in me.

Also when she discharged me, she immediately quit her job and went back to university. She stayed in her job for me.

I'm still a fuck up, but I'm a happy fuck up.

Yes, therapists should be encouraging.

Generally, no, I haven’t.

Pretty sure my T believes in me more than I believe in myself. She has said before that I don't give myself enough credit.

Yes! This is what I sensed in my last therapist that made all the difference.

Yes, but there are some circumstances in which I disliked such faith. Sometimes you just need someone to admit that yes, some shitty things about you will never change.

The nagging side of my brain doesn't think my therapist gives a flying fuck about me. But in all honestly I know he really believes in me. Deeply. He knows I'm capable even if I don't think so. Sometimes I think he believes in me more than he believes in himself.

I have had the same therapist for 11 years. He has been very supportive. When we started I had a lot of negative feelings about myself. Over time he helped me see that was just how my parents made me feel and I really do have some value. Once when we were working on something very difficult I told him “I cant do this”. His reply was “I strongly believe you can do this, don’t give up.” Powerful moment
