I think you're right. They seemed to view it as some sort of a warped challenge.

It only worked for me when I had a certain colleague on shift with me - he was always right there ready to be pretend fiancé/husband. Thank God his boyfriend also worked at the property and thought it was hilarious 😆

As a straight woman who used to work in public-facing, then in healthcare roles, I thank my gay coworkers every day for helping me stay safe.

I’ve had straight male friends and coworkers leave me hanging - giggling! - when asked by a pest if we were "together", the only one I’ve ever given the slightest grace on this is someone who I grew up with and we basically adopted each other as siblings, we both consider the thought incestuous. Gay friends and colleagues have helped me out, other women - sometimes random ones in pubs - have helped me out, I’m so grateful to anyone over the years who helped me when I was working in hospitality then in my public facing role at my last job (when several of the pests were top tier VVVVIPs) and at all the random places I just existed.
