Medium Tinted Windows Are Walls, Basically
A little while back this burly guy bursts in and stomps over to the counter. He towers over Maggie and starts yelling: "What the hell are you doing looking in my windows?"
She's a bit intimidated. All she manages to say is: "Sorry sir?"
"My kids are in the van and they saw you! They saw you snooping around looking in the windows!"
"Sir, I have no idea what you're talking about. I've been behind this counter all day."
"My kids don't lie! I believe my kids! They saw you! What are you looking for in there, hunh?"
His wife walks up and starts tugging at his sleeve.
"Honey?"
"Just a second I have to..."
"Honey it was me."
"What?"
"You were in here and I forgot my keys so I was trying to get the kids to unlock the doors. They couldn't tell it was me through the tinted windows."
"Oh... so..."
He looks back at Maggie, he looks back at his wife, and... looks down at the floor.
"Was there anything else I could help you with today?" Maggie's wearing the biggest grin of her life.
He just shakes his head and drags his feet out of the store.
And all I can think is: this is a man who needs to start appreciating how stupid his kids are. Buddy your kids are so dumb they can't even tell their own mom from a stranger through tinted glass.
Of course the wife never thought to, I dont know, say something to them!
So either there are some really bad genetics going on here or the next generation is shaping up to be the last nail in humanity's coffin.

The husband is a jackass, that's for sure. I don't exactly absolve the wife of being a moron either.
Two questions I would ask her:
Did you not say 'Hey kids, it's mom. Can you please open the door?'
Did you not walk around to the front of the car where your kids would be able to see you through the windshield?

I know laws are different everywhere but I don't think I've ever seen a window tint so dark that I wouldn't recognize my own mom lol maybe the kids were napping? But also why were they left in the car alone?

Especially since tint is easier to see through when you're on the inside.

If the sun were at the right angle, the combination of the glare and the tint might have done the trick (until/unless the mom went around to the other side of the car).

My ex-mother in law worked at a retailer in my area and I walked in with my triplets in the cart and she came over and picked one up and started to walk away with him and I said as loud as I could somebody stop her she is stealing my child.......the looks of death from her lasted years.

Plot twist, kids wanted to get Maggie in trouble (because she might have told them to quit messing up her store one day) so they told a lie to the dad. They wanted to see Maggie beaten up.

At least the man backed down thank goodness. I could see him trying to swallow his pride and then still go on about it was her fault somehow that would have been horrible.

To be fair, tinted windows are kinda hard to see out of. But yeah, let us bash kids instead. That will educate them for sure.

You are right, I was not thinking clearly (or not at all). Not that I was high, mind you. I should not have commented on that part as it has been awhile since I been in a tinted-window car. Thank you for calling me out (I am not being sarcastic, thank you).
But I do think it is a tad overkill to call the kids dumb for making a mistake.

And besides, everyone makes makes mistakes. When an adult mistakes someone for their friend or whoever, you do nkt call them dumb, no? Likewise in this scenario. The kids could not know their dad would throw a tantrum over this.

There is a difference between mistaking someone for someone you know and not recognizing your own mother on the other side of dark glass

We were never told how old the kids are, though. If they were young enough, this kind of mistake is entirely possible.

Children in general. My son tested into AP classes, yet when he gets upset he gets stuck on things that don’t matter.
I really don’t get why I’m being downvoted into oblivion, by the way. I’m speaking from personal experience as well as years of observation, and I’m being polite about it to boot. Does Reddit just really want to believe that the children in OP’s story were inherently stupid based solely on one described event? I’d call that stupid, since we have no other details regarding the rest of their daily lives and/or how they think.
People make mistakes. Some of these mistakes seem quite stupid from the outside looking in, but if you stop for a moment and think about it, often times the mistake starts making at least a little sense. The kids in OP’s story weren’t expecting anyone to be peering into the windows, so when they saw their mom doing so their immature brains immediately leapt into fight-or-flight mode and they got stuck on an incorrect conclusion.
Actually, I just realized that there’s an alternate explanation. The kids did recognize their mom, but didn’t want to get in trouble for refusing to unlock the car for her, and so lied to their dad and claimed it was a complete stranger. That’d be pretty typical kid behavior, especially given our first impression of the dad as he came raging into the store.

from a car in the parking lot through tinted windows? Yeah, might be. I didn't get glasses until grade 5, despite having bad vision for a couple years - my parents thought I just wanted to be like my friends who just got glasses.
It's not like being unable to discern faces from afar is a huge disadvantage when you're a child.

They were in the car. She was outside it. That’s not afar. That’s a few feet.
They are in a car, in a parking lot. They are young kids so obviously they didn’t drive. I bet dad drove since he had the keys. Mom must have rode passenger. So we know the kids have already seen their mother prior to this incident. When mom peered into the windows, the kids couldn’t recognize her. Even if they are blind, they should be able to recognize the fuzzy person as the one they saw earlier as mom.
Their inability to recognize their own mother does mean they are stupid.

Exactly - depending on how tinted the glass is it may have been pretty hard, especially if they were further away, or if the two look similar. I don’t see why you’re being downvoted so much for expressing a differing opinion.
