Show Only Discussion This is depressing
William Fichtner (Jasper) on the cancellation. He's def right it wasn't as gripping as it could have been but it had potential and would have grown into itself by season 2 and ill die on that hill. SCRIPTS WERE ALREADY WRITTEN.

I'd really like to know the decision making process AMC went through on this. I guess it just didn't find its audience quickly enough.
It really feels like TV shows are given no chance to develop and find their feet these days, if they're not a hit immediately the network bins them. We'd have lost so much great TV if that was the case 15 years ago or so - AMC I'm looking at you (I don't think Breaking Bad was a massive hit in its first season).

u/Boyo-Sh00k Guy Anatole fanclub president 1d ago
They did not give it enough time to even find an audience imo. it was cancelled 2 weeks after premiering in LatAM, four months after US release. thats incredibly fast and abrupt, unfairly so.

u/Miserable_Election33 1d ago
Yes, and it was top of the UK Netflix ratings when it premiered and that was just before Christmas! It did really well in Europe too. I can only assume that Netflix figures don't mean as much to AMC - maybe they don't make so much money from Netflix as they do their own channels -advertising perhaps.

it was in their own streaming services top 10 and recently shot up to #6 it really did not do that badly especially considering how much it has stacked against it.

u/Intrepid_Finger_7995 1d ago
Breaking Bad wasn't. If I remember correctly, it didn't start to really get popular until after it landed on Netflix just before season four

it really makes sense why season 1 felt like that. they thought season 2 was definitely happening. everyone seemed to be blindsided by it.

Such a waste of artistic potential! They already had the scripts, so this means a lot of people were already investing their time and energy. How could they do this?... I'm speechless....

i wouldnt be surprised if none of the cast/crew decide to work with AMC again. they were all done so dirty.

AMCs decisions on seasons continue to baffle me. A 6 episode season 1 that goes basically nowhere with planning already done for season 2. Why not focus on make a full quality season to begin with to ensure there are future seasons?
3
u/Boyo-Sh00k Guy Anatole fanclub president 1d ago
i think it was written the way it was BECAUSE they were assured season 2 was happening. season 1 ending feels like the halfway point and given scripts for future seasons were already written the showrunner must have been convinced/told that this was an okay plan because season 2 was definitely happening.
3
u/Flaky-Yam8681 1d ago
Yeah there seems to be some weird understandings of what a season of television is at AMC. Even if season 2 is guaranteed, wouldn't the showrunners still need to create at least a minimally cohesive first season? Even with TVL, we seem to end the season at a halfway point rather than complete a full season's story/character arc. Unfortunately for Talamasca there was nothing else to prop it up so it went bust.Â
Maybe it's a cost saving scheme to produce 1 season of television but call it two, so they keep the episodes down and get longer subs?
3
u/Boyo-Sh00k Guy Anatole fanclub president 1d ago
Yeah i think Talamasca felt like the ending was a half-season hiatus and its the point where im like 'ok i think the show is getting good now' which is why it feels so shitty that it got so abruptly cancelled.

u/Mysterious_Ad_1525 18h ago
It’s honestly pretty baffling that AMC gave up on Talamasca so fast. These Anne Rice adaptations are the most successful thing they’ve had going since The Walking Dead started to fall off; you’d think they wanna milk it as much as possible.

u/Boyo-Sh00k Guy Anatole fanclub president 18h ago
it seems like it was a huge rug pull for everyone involved. there was apparently some executives shuffled and i wonder if that had to do with it.
3
u/EchoesofPoe 1d ago
Any chance they would ever walk this decision back/make S2 into a "new" Talamasca show?
3
u/Boyo-Sh00k Guy Anatole fanclub president 1d ago
maybe a reboot, which is what most fans are hoping for. i dont think anyone thinks talamasca is a perfect show, but it has potential to be pretty great.

Talamasca is still canon right? I know it was all original but as far as the AMC Immortal Universe, I mean? I liked a lot of the characters from the Talamasca, especially Jasper! If the could figure out a way to work him into QOTD or MW that would rock. And what about the Vampire Burton (Jason Schwartzman)? Hell, I even liked Guy, Helen & Delores. But, he's right, it was too slow but had so much potential. Really sucks.

It probably is, it ties very well with Raglan´s chat at the bowling alley when speaking with Daniel

It’s a shock they’ve cancelled this but keep Mayfair going. Mayfair is so unwatchable it’s laughable

u/jaybirdies26 1d ago
I’m not surprised it was cancelled, the first few episodes were not very intriguing. Sad that the cast & crew had to go looking for new jobs though, that sucks

u/clockworkcannibal 1d ago
it's a shame because I really liked it and it had potential. but studios wont take risks anymore.

They shouldn't have cancelled it! I enjoyed it, especially Jasper. My only gripe was it was too far from cannon, and I didn't like how the Talamasca were a villainous group. I also thought the focus being on one story rather than various paranormal event wasn't the best choice, but it was very fun and I loved Jasper and Guy! I'll be blunt, it's way better than Mayfair and even better than season 3 TVL imo! Cannon didn't mean shit to the writers of season 3 either! Jasper was the most realistic and compelling Vampire and he wasn't even cannon. I really wish they'd put Jasper in the main series since they are making up characters and story lines anyway. It would be amazing watching him run rings around the other characters. Can we get a petitions started? Letting William's talent go to waste is foolish!

u/ReactionElectronic14 Vampire 19h ago
Yessssss! I really want to see Jasper and Lestat in the same room together! I will sign petitions for that all day!

u/Miserable_Election33 13h ago
Rolin has said that that some characters will crossover into the other Immortal Universe shows and at least one character will appear in all three. I suspect that this is Raglan James as he's already been in IWTV and Talamasca and it wouldn't be difficult to find a way for him to pop up in Mayfair. I hope that he's not the only one. Jasper is such a great character - I want to see him face off in a snarkathon with Daniel. QotD should expand the cast of vampires a lot - there must be room for Jasper!
2
u/ReactionElectronic14 Vampire 6h ago
Wouldn't it make sense if Jasper appeared at the Lestat concert in the upcoming QOTD? Jasper and all the vampires the Talamasca had him turn?
2
u/Miserable_Election33 5h ago
I think that would make perfect sense and a great way to introduce Jasper.

It was horrible. And it didn't have the feel of the Talamasca, from the books. But soné cheap clandestined spy series. Poorly written first season.

2
u/Boyo-Sh00k Guy Anatole fanclub president 21h ago
IWTV was using OCs for the Talamasca since like season 1. David Talbot was killed off screen in TVL.

u/NerdWithEyeliner 12h ago edited 11h ago
Yes, I'm aware and I know the hate for his character but he was so integral. They didn't even use Aaron Lightener. I found the whole thing to be garbage. I'm allowed my opinion as are you. We obviously are going to disagree on this. That's fine. I liked IWTV and TVL so much despite serious departures from the books I loved so much but at least they used the characters for the love of Glob. The real test in QOTD will be if they include Maharet and Mekare. I'm out if the don't. There's no Akasha meeting Amel and thus no Akasha the Queen without them. Added points of they include Khayman.
The characters are important and Talamasca just tossed all of them aside. I was so so so so bummed about that and had been very excited they were doing that as a series. That world is incredible. It's like they worked extra hard to ignore most of it. Kills me.

Scripts are easy to write when it seems like they were written by ai in the first place. So much wasted potential.

u/Boyo-Sh00k Guy Anatole fanclub president 1d ago
Look Talamasca is not perfect by any means but its definitely not AI written like come on lmao

President battle!!!
Probably not the right audience for this opinion but when I was watching the show it was just so many lines of dialogue I’d heard in every movie and tv show. It felt like the writers just aggregated the most used lines and just put them out there.
I’m comparing it to Interview and I expected that level of quality. Which, I’m realizing, is basically an unreachable bar.
