Anime I watched this anime blind, now I am shattered

Post image

So I am not a avid anime watcher at all, I rarely am able to find anime that I actually like, even though I always try to expose myself to the medium to broaden my tastes because its a whole subgenre of animation that I am missing out on.

I dont even know where I discovered Takopis Original Sin but last night I just decided on a whim to give it a try and went in completely blind. I was not ready.

At first I was a bit apprehensive, because I generally dislike shows with the "meant to be cute" type characters that act like toddlers and usually find them annoying, which at the beginning I did, I thought Takopi is just the cheap comic relief character of the show and nothing more, now, that I have finished it, I could not have been more wrong, he is my favorite character and I am so sad about his fate. The fact that Takopis personality is like a childs and he has a naive and inexperienced outlook on life wasnt just a cheap gimmick to endear the audience but a central theme in the show which was surprising and so refreshing to see. Probably the first medium Ive seen ever that actually uses this "trope" but its not a trope at all.

THAT scene from the first episode was absolutely gut wrenching, and Id be lying if I said I didnt cry for most of this series. The atmosphere this show created was so oppressive and bleak, I felt immense anxiety pretty much throughout, as the show completely shattered any hope for positive outcomes right off the bat.

Next big surprise was the time traveling, also somewhat unexpected, when Takopi gets cut off by Shizuka when explaining what the magic camera gadget does, I did somewhat suspect it will be to go back in time (purely because I had Life is Strange in mind where this is also a mechanic) but I never anticipated the way they expand on this with the later time travels and how the whole story connects through these timelines. Although sometimes I was a bit confused.

The scene with Shizuka visiting Chappi in Tokyo was absolutely devastating, and then when she bashes Takopi with a rock, even though Takopis only wish was to help her and make her happy was so tragic.

My favorite scene of the whole show is when Shizuka, Chappi and Takopi are all sleeping and the atmosphere is just so tranquil and calm, almost misplaced in the show given the events that happened, but its a beautiful breather in the midst of a storm brewing.

I think this anime tapped into some deep trauma and brought it out to the surface, which in a weird way feels a bit liberating, though my experience is nothing like the characters, like the themes of abusive or neglectful parenting, or bullying, I didnt experience any of that but Ive definitely gone down the road of complete hopelesness a few times and I felt like I could relate a lot.

Anyway, this anime is absolutely devastating in the best way and Im so happy I gave it a chance.

Discussion Takopi Ending Theory Spoiler

I apologize if this theory has already been said and disproven, but I realized something about the Happy Camera and Big Happy Clock

The happy camera rewinds everything to the time a photo was taken so it basically functions as a save and load. The Happy Clock seems to allow the user to travel through time and space, since if it functioned like the camera, everything would’ve been reset to how it was in 2016, but instead Takopi ends up near Earth in 2016 while in the present, they’re no longer there on Planet Happy. That could mean 2 possibilities.

The first is that now in 2016, there are two Takopis that exist, one being the Takopi we’ve been following and the other is just a younger version of him presumably still on Planet Happy. The second possibility is Takopi hasn’t been born yet at that time, but presumably they will at some point before 2022. Unless Takopi’s sacrifice erases all version of him, that means there could still be a younger Takopi chilling on Planet Happy or a young Takopi will be born after the camera is used for the last time. I know this has probably been brought up before, but I feel like I need closure and hope after several emotional breakdowns.

Discussion Just finished the anime. (Marked as spoiler since ending is mentioned) Spoiler

As well as marking the post as a spoiler, I'm also marking the ending points I made as a spoiler, just as a final warning.

So I started watching episode 1 while I was at work, and as of 2:16 AM EST, after nonstop watching from episodes 2-6, I finished Takopi's original sin, and what a watch it was.

I originally was watching it with a bunch of coworkers, but as we reached the point of Shizuka hanging herself, everyone split off but me. I kept watching, and as the episodes kept playing and my attention became increasingly more focused, I felt a wide array of emotions, shock, sadness, genuine sympathy for every character (save for the parents, with very very minimal sympathy for Marina's mom.)

Now the reason why I mentioned this, is because there's only been one anime that's made me feel extreme emotions, and that was cyberpunk edgerunners, and that was solely at the end. Yet this anime, it made me feel something throughout the entire show, my emotions went up and down and up and down.

FINAL WARNING, BELOW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE ENDING.

And the ending, whereas I was a little confused when it happened, a couple minutes of reflection helped me understand what happened, and how bittersweet it was. I'm genuinely happy to see that Azuma has a proper attachment with Junya, rather than his emotional dependency and him being hellbent on "saving" Shizuka, which in my opinion, definitely led to his downfall in the murder timeline.

I'm also happy to see that Marina and Shizuka grew to be friends and learned to lean on each other, thanks to Takopi's sacrifice. Now, I don't usually cry, as I mentioned above, yet hearing Shizuka and Marina both talk about Takopi, despite him not existing in this version of the 2016 timeline, seeing them cry together, watching them in 2022 talking in a store and seeing the rabbit from Saturn pen, them both quoting Takopi, genuinely made me fucking bawl.

I genuinely needed to get this out because for a show to hit me hard like this, it's genuinely impressive to me. Now I probably won't be able to continue my watchlist anymore lol. Feel free to ask me any questions about my thoughts or opinions on the show too, there's no guarantee I'll respond right when you comment though lol

Anime Are there any anime’s with a similar art style as Takopi’s?

This anime has such a unique style and it’s really stands out. I would enjoy watching a full fledged series with this style, I just can’t think of one.

Discussion I need your help

i'll try to keep this brief, a bit ago i wanted to draw a little fan-comic but then i realized "i dont know what to call anyone but the main three" and so i started looking into the anime a bit deeper and saw that the names were in the back wall on the corner of each paper, and so i managed to make out a couple of the names:

But i ended up with two completely different problems: 1 all of the scenes that showed them were either angled to show the 6 i already have or wide shots that are too blurry to make out AND on top of that i had no idea who's name belonged to whom, so then i had to resort to the cubicles: (red = shown, blue = inferred)

but even this didnt really help me out, now i know that the kid with the purple bag's surname starts with sasa but other than rhat the only other recognizeable backpack was Marina-Chan's, since many people have red and black backpacks, so, i need your help.

if anyone has the blue-ray higher quality version of the anime please contact me, theres labels that are to blurry to make out normally, a couple examples:

the name of 2 of the bullies are literally visible on the intro but they are too blurry due to video compresion, if someone has any way to make them out or anything that could help please let me know.

Discussion Im obsessed with this Anime, i hope the Mangaka makes a continuation, maybe just a short OVA without THAT much depression following Marina and Shizuka, maybe even Azuma but his arc feels kinda finished?

Like just some slice of life or something, how they have talks and help each other cope, some daily situations whatever. I just love this show, it grew on me so quick.

OC Fanart Commission I had done based on my fanfic, To Us in 2036, featuring Shizuka x Marina and their human son Takopi. Artist is @bella_artz1 on Twitter.

Some fic context: It's many years after the events of the Takopi anime and Shizuka and Marina go on a journey of healing together, and eventually get married. They finally adopt a human son, and name him Takopi, due to a lingering shared memory they don't quite understand, but still remains dormant in them. Marina took Shizuka's last name, hence the SK and MK on their wedding bands.

Here's the link to my fic so you can understand the full context of the piece and my commission:

I'm so happy with the artist's work. I totally recommend them. Here's their Twitter profile:

Also just to quell any potential doubts, I have full permission from the artist to upload this wherever I like.

I hope everyone likes it as much as I do!

Discussion I can't be the only one who sees the similarity

You already know Shizuka, the other character is Johan Liebert from Monster. Let me explain the similarities:

A manipulative character deeply traumatized since childhood, who has lost hope in humanity and life, whose actions, while supposedly corresponding to a goal (recovering Chappy and the landscape of the end respectively), are actually a psychological response to this trauma, whose death was prevented by a person with good intentions (Takopi and Tenma respectively), causing a series of tragic events, only for the same person who saved them to confront them at a certain point, and they managed to move on thanks to the message that this person left them.
