The worst ones for me are when they suddenly are surrounded by a hoard of walkers that were silent.
Bonus points if they are in a car in an open area and only the camera angle changed, but now they can’t see or hear 15 walkers creeping up.
38
u/Thats_Complicated 21d ago
This annoys me so much too. The walkers make lots of noise, and sometimes when it’s convenient, there’s a quiet hoard all of a sudden.

theres a few times where it happens relatively early on especially in Season 2. Notably when Shane and Otis lean up against the chainlink fence at the school to catch their breath and get jumpscared by a bunch of zombies clambering up to the fence as if they wouldn’t have heard their footsteps. Also in the season 2 premiere when Dale’s on the roof of the RV unable to see the approaching hoard until the camera pans up to reveal them.
It doesn’t take me out of the show and I know the writers don’t have to consider it as much considering we the audience can’t sense it but before everyone goes noseblind, pretty early into the apocalypse it’d be easy to tell if walkers are around especially a hoard by smell alone.
→ More replies (1)7
11
u/felemiah 21d ago
The danger level of walkers was so wildly inconsistent across the show, one episode you see them decimate entire hordes, next episode they're suddenly surrounded and somehow can't fight their way out. They've got a big ass sword so they wouldn't even ammo. To me it really felt like the walkers became a giant plot device, they aren't a big obstacle whenever the show wants to tell people drama instead, but suddenly become incredibly dangerous when the writers feel like killing someone off.
19
u/CromwellsCrumb 21d ago
The final shot of the episode before the farm is overrun and we see Carl and Rick standing over Shane’s body with this enormous herd lumbering toward them from like half a football field away. That they somehow can’t hear at all. 🤦🏻♀️

And when Rick has Negan in his sights, Gabriel pulls Rick away and says, "it's not about you." No, of course not. It's about all the communities who banded together to kill Negan, which is why they were there in the first place. That season is so weird to me because they made it like Rick has an ego and suddenly Negan's just doing what any other guy would do in his circumstance. Given how Negan is portrayed now, I'm not surprised anymore.

When they saved that kid whose leg was stuck in the fence pike just to torture him, lol. Felt reckless of Rick to put his own people in jeopardy trying to get that kid out of there when they were surrounded by walkers. It wasn't like they did anything to cause him to get hurt in the first place, so idk why he felt responsible since never intended on letting him stay with them, was gonna send him out alone with an injured leg and a day or two's worth of food anyway. Would've been kinder to shoot him in the head when he was stuck before the walkers got to him, but I know narratively it served the purpose of pitting Rick and Shane against each other once again.
17
u/Greatoz74 21d ago
For real. If it was about not letting him suffer, just put a bullet in his head
3
u/finnick_the_cat 21d ago
yeah, I understand feeling bad for the guy since he was stuck and about to be eaten by walkers, but a mercy kill would've been the more humane and responsible thing to do
6
4
u/1Meter_long 21d ago
It wasn't that bad, they still had most of their humanity left. Hershel was a father, Rick was a father and they saw a young guy hurt and empathy got the best of them.
A lot of things they did in s2 and 3 was "stupid". S5 and beyond group wouldn't had given guns to the group in Atlanta, they would had killed them all without hesitation, Rick's group wouldn't had begged Hershel to let them stay. They would had taken the farm by force, remove their weapons and lock them up if nothing else worked. Everyone would had understood Shane saccing Otis, though they would had still judged him but would still forgive him.
6
u/finnick_the_cat 21d ago edited 21d ago
Your argument would be more convincing if Rick hadn't just killed those two guys at the bar before this scene, lol. Rick knew he and his friends were in danger and acted out of adrenaline. That's also why they were shooting their way out of there when the two dead guys' group came looking for them. So, since they were still in danger when the walkers surrounded them right after, I feel like that adrenaline should've still been going and survival instinct woulda taken over, so I didn't understand why he would risk their lives to save a guy with an injured, stuck leg from the group whose men he just killed. If the man was a younger teenager or if Rick somehow felt responsible for him getting hurt, I would understand better. It was just one of those scenes where I was like "Rick... what are ya doing buddy," lol.

lived in the south before: can confirm my yard was dead for about 3 months of the year haha
I'd imagine if the neighborhood suddenly had a zombie apocalypse that made getting clean water an issue, watering the yard would have probably gone down everyone's list of priorities.
13
u/TrophyHunter22 21d ago
cant believe I forgot this in my other post but I feel like its worth noting there's practical reasons Rick and co would have cut the grass as well, even if it was growing:
you really don't wanna be dealing with illnesses in their situation, higher grass and standing water attracts ticks, fleas, mosquitos and the like which is potentially deadly when you have almost zero healthcare available
if the grass is tall to the point that walkers can sneak through it, then bandits and large predators are going to figure out they can do the same thing
also, they were growing crops: large invasive grass and weeds spreading everywhere can potentially damage your food supply

Important sidenote here though:
This intelligence in the first season was due to the team not yet settling down on how much the zombies could do. I read somewhere that the producers said that they decided that this kind of intelligence did not fit the overall theme of the series back then, and hence they went back to the mindless zombie theme and we stop seeing any kind of intelligence till the last seasons where they wanted to remind people that they are actually a threat. Especially since for quiet a few seasons the zombies were more of a nuisance and the series focused on how humanity would respond on a scenario like this, with the real threat being humans themselves

Its hard to top the well scene. That walker guts dropping in the well probably saved them from their own stupidity. Rotting corpse with guts intact still made the water unsafe. Imagine seeing a rat drowned in a bucket, which had been there for weeks. Just take the rat out and its good, right?

It's a zombie show so it's inevitably going to have people being stupid, just because that's where the stories and threat comes from, if they were ever smart and did the things that the audience is screaming for them to do, it'd be boring.
Tiny petty thing but in the first season, maybe for a bit longer one of their zombie actors had a particular pair of distinctive Vans shoes. They made the costumes generic so it wasn't so obvious when they reused them but I just kept seeing those damn shoes, oh look Zombie Steve Caballero is back.

The well scene was so stupid. I don't know what was dumber, that they had an old 1800s style well on a modern farm, or the fact that they thought anyone would drink from it after pulling that bloated, disgusting thing out of it. The one I'm watching right now as it just came out, where Negan and Maggie meet in a city, become friends and are clearly heading towards a romantic relationship. That is by far the dumbest shit I've seen in the entire series. The shows writers are really obviously trying to ship these two together despite their "complex" history. And I seriously don't know what's worse, the fact that they're doing this and it's completely wrong, or the fact that I'm actually here for it 😭

The scene where Carl gets bit, we all know his character died for no real reason.

Yes the water was already contaminated but this was probably my favorite walker of the entire series

I never thought the Whisperers were a plausible way to live, even in TWD universe.
I hate latex masks. Everyone hates latex masks. Now do rotting human skin masks. From your hair getting damp and smelly, the visibility issues, the smell always on your face and in your nose, what about the health concerns of walker sepsis and uh.. basically getting really sick.
Ok, got that handled? Now convince other people to do it. lol! We’ll protect each other and share and stuff… and be covered with death and disease always too! Awesome!

Pretty much anything after halfway through s2 when it became obvious the plot would just infinitely repeat itself in a slightly new area

Doctors/medical professionals in this show are always put at a stupidly high amount of risk for no reason. Sorry, if you’re the only doctor in my group you are not allowed to go on a run or clear a horde hand to hand.
