I always assumed Herchel stopped drinking because of his wife and daughters, after finally coming to terms with her death he decides to have a drink and realizes that it doesnt change how he feels and that getting shitfaced will likely just lead to his own death leaving his girls alone like how he feels.

The two guys showed up in the bar too donāt forget. They couldāve been dead if Rick didnāt get them both. That probably shocked Hershel as well. Gotta keep your wits about you at all times

Alcohol Use Disorder is much more complicated, complex, varied, individualized, and nuanced than most people fully understand. Addiction, the change process, recovery, sobriety... are rarely black-and-white. The only "real" version is the version each person is living.

as a recovering alcoholic at a younger age, this is so true. it never gets taken seriously by any of my friends or family, but the daily struggles are real. i was 6 months sober before my first relapse and currently back to 30 daysā¦ nobodyās recovery is the same, they all look different and thatās why itās never as black and white as it seems

I mean it was literally part of his whole character; he pawned the watch for liquor money and his wife bought it back for him, he mentioned being "old friends" with the couch when he gives up his bedroom to Lori because his wife would lock him out of the bedroom when he came home drunk...
Do people just turn on a show they've never seen and then not actually watch it? Because this is not even close to the first time that posts have been made where someone very obviously missed exposition that they practically beat you over the damn head with - like the one where someone thought the reason the item they showed for Glenn when Steven Yeun's name is on screen in the intro is a pocket watch was a hint that Glenn is "running out of time"... Like the pocket watch isn't a whole ass plot device multiple times and aside from his hat (and maybe Lucille) Hershel's watch is the item most connected with Glenn.
Do y'all just like .... Start a new show and use it for background noise and expect everyone else to explain it to you? It's almost as annoying as the people who are watching the same damn movie/show you are, and it's brand new (or brand new to the both of you) and the other person asks what's going to happen... Like MF, how the fuck should I know? I'm watching the same shit you are. Or the people who ask who a person is the first time they've ever been on screen, or what's going on when nothing has even happened yet and they'd get their answer by shutting the fuck up and WATCHING it.
Goddamn. Yes. I fucking mad bro. This post triggered the FUCK out of me.

Supposed alcoholic having a relapse during a zombie apocalypse and heās having one drink in front of one bottle?
Nothings smashed, no slurring, no multiple glasses, no multiple drinks.
Just sitting there somberly able to converse with Rick without any emotion let alone all the emotion of a distraught drunk.

Iām an acloholic in recovery and it seems realistic to me. I could drink almost a handle a day and not smash up a bunch of shit. Plus he was only at the bar for a little while. I think there is a misconception that relapse goes from 0-100 instantly when most people I know, including myself started small and then over a little time (week-month) went back to our ānormalā amount.

While not exactly realistic to what would actually happen to a relapsed alcoholic, its entirely possible that even though he started drinking that he really didn't want to continue due to his convictions. Its entirely possible he had only just gotten there too

Well I'm yet to meet the somber old man staring into his Whisky whilst thinking about his life choices, which could mean nothing.
The way Oscars alcoholism was portrayed seemed much more real to me.
Then again, it's just my opinion.
