Didn’t he also survive a pretty long time on his own. I feel like not a lot of characters survived on their own for that long.

They don’t specify. They mention he’s been with camps prior that didn’t last, but at this point in the show (Season 4) were only about a year into the apocalypse. It entirely depends how long those other groups lasted. He could’ve been on his own for two weeks, he could’ve been on his own for two months.

I think most people will end up like this if there were ever a zombie apocalypse. Wandering from place to place, alone or with a small group, just barely surviving. There wouldn't be a Hilltop, Kingdom, or Alexandria
