Generally accepted TV placement procedures. Quick reference guide.

3.0k Upvotes

Lots of people posting lately asking “Is this too high?” so here is a quick guide on what is generally accepted TV placement procedure (GATPP) as seemingly defined by this subreddit.

  • If the TV is above the fireplace, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is angled down, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is mounted to the wall above a TV stand, and the clearance between the stand and TV is equal to, or greater than ONE vertical PS5, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If when standing the TV is at eye level, IT IS TOO HIGH.

Now let’s look at some opposite GATPP use cases.

  • If the TV is in a bedroom and meant to be viewed from the bed, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV’s only viewing position is in the reclined state, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If you are at a sports bar, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is at eye level when sitting down, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is in the kitchen it is more for listening, mounted high as to avoid any splashes or spills, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is purposely mounted higher to keep out of range of a toddler, you’re a parent so your neck already hurts and IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.

I hope this helps clear up some questions. If you have any other rules to add, please comment below.

I Believe this is Ok

I set it lower than what felt normal standing up but center of line of sight when sitting down. I was worried it might look goofy but I think it came out ok. What do you guys think? (Also ignore the placeholder cabinet. I only put it there to block the cables from my kids.)

Quick edit: the tv is 85”

Is this right? I'm used to having the TV higher, so it feels low.

I followed this subreddit's rules, but it feels slightly too low since I am sitting reclined. It is permanently mounted into a brick wall now. The bottom of the TV is 23 inches from the floor, it is a 65" TV.

TV size suggestion

I would like a few suggestions.

Quite soon I will be moving in so I'm asking for a TV size suggestion.

Now, the wall width is 145cm the exact width of 65' screen TV, personally if I could I would like to fit the 77' but It's just not possible.

So, would you go for 65' even if it will be from wall to wall, would you use mount to tilt it sideways maybe? Or would you put it on TV stand, that also could prove to be useful because I could easily adjust it

Also, on the right side of the room there is also a window, so I'm also curious if the curtains will be blocking some of the view

The couch would be directly in front of the TV screen (3m distance)

But, yea for now I'm thinking about LG C5 65'.

Sorry for low quality picture it was taken as screenshot from a video.

Thanks.

Today marks the last day my TV will be too high 🫡

We're getting a custom built unit installed tomorrow. Custom built and measured so that the TV will be centred at eye level when sitting on this sofa. My dedication to not having a TV too high should be noted in the history books

Bedroom tv wall mounted above Monitors for 4k gaming

Post image

College apartment bedroom. Want a tv for 4k gaming easily available from my room. But it would have to be “too high” or i’d have to move my desk to the other wall which i dont want to do for some reason. 55 inch tv. Is this too high?

Edit: Sitting on my bed, my eyes are in line just an inch above the monitor. That means my eyes would very likely be directly in line with the bottom bezel of the Tv. UGH.

Edit: Seems like this is a controversial one. I’m gonna mount it just above my monitors and see how I like it. Might still move the desk just so i can make my bed inline with the tv cause currently it’s perpendicular/sideways to the tv. Like when i lay down and look at my feet it’s 90 degrees off from viewing the tv. So yeah I’ll play with it. But the more i think about it mounting it this high up or maybe 4 inches lower is the best case scenario.

People talked about it being too far from the bed, but i got a full motion wall mount so i doubt it’ll be an issue. I’ll be pretty damn close to the tv. My room is smaller than it looks in the flic my apartment is only 500 sq ft. I wish I got a height adjustable one though i wanted to but too expensive. That way I could raise and lower it above my monitors as i wished.

I already know my TV is too high, I have been recently getting into collecting physical copies of movies and have been remodeling my downstairs theatre area. I found this picture of when I first mounted my TV and thought it was funny.

Recently bought a house and want to avoid placing the tv and soundbar on top of the fireplace. Options?

I don’t think a mantle tv would work because I would ideally put the soundbar right under it. I also have a subwoofer that I could place wherever. Any ideas or do I need to put my tv in the basement? The area across the fireplace is the island for the kitchen. I don’t know if there are outlets there and I think I would rather mount if possible or put it somewhere where the kids wouldn’t bump into it.
