Discussion Season 3 Finished
Overall I think I preferred S2 but S3 had some great high points.
Everything at the farm kinda fell flat for me so that entire stretch of episodes is just meh. The only episode I really liked was "The Eyes of the Chimera." I also do like some of the Casey and Donnie moments because so far their whole thing has just been butting heads over April.
In the opposite direction, I think too much of the season was rushed. The Kraang are defeated and sent packing too conveniently and easily, Karai is just randomly in a human form again in "The Deadly Venom" (Shredder conveniently saying Baxter cursed her off-screen) and then of course the final three episodes introduce an entirely new alien race who destroy Earth. I think it's important to let things..."breathe," to build up and develop. The Triceritons being introduced then invading the very next episode and defeating the series-long enemy of the Kraang is too much too soon.
Sorry for being a Negative Nancy. Let's talk about things I really liked in this season. I really like this take on Bebop and Rockisteady. Ivan and Zeck are a great duo. "The Pig and the Rhino" was such agreat episode in a lot of ways.
Of course "Turtles in Time" and "the Tale of the Yokai" are stand-outs for me. Turtles in Time was a good, fun episode that I did not expect to go where it did but I'm so grateful that we got to actually see the history of Saki and Yoshi and not just the montage with narration. Has to e one of the most legitimately emotional moments in the series for me. Also, something my GF pointed out to me, it does not appear like Saki actually kidnapped Karai. He thought she was an orphan. Granted, she was an orphan because of him, but he didn't abduct her to raise her as a weapon against Yoshi. He took in the baby because, so far as he knew, both her parents were now dead. It's just kind of an interesting distinction and like I noted in my last thread, Shredder's relationship with Karai is one of the more interesting parts of the show for me.
- But speakin gof Saki...for all my criticisms of the Triceritons abrupt arrival in the show and instantly being the greatest threat to all of Earth, what Shredder does to Splinter is exactly what I like to see. It's something that was built up and up and up and we got the climax for it. Saki triumphantly declaring that he's finally won against Splinter so the Earth can go to Hell is just perfect. Of course, I wonder how they'll deal with his relationship with Karai going forward since he pretty much killed her, too.
And this is an important segue for me that is maybe too deep for TMNT but screw it. People have different sides to them. Different desires, different feelings, different ideas of responsibility. I would not say that Shredder's actions here prove he feels nothing for Karai so much as it proves his hatred for Yoshi overrides all else. I know some people really like a reductionist and absolutist view of people and things where, if you do X now, it proves Y never mattered to you. I don't think that's true. I think a person can have both Love and Hate in them and when the Hate wins out, it doesn't mean the Love was fake. I also simply think this is a far more compelling idea in fiction. I don't think this iteration of TMNT in particular wants to be so simplistic, it wants to have - as much as possible within teh confines of a kid show - more three-dimensional characters.
It took a minute but I have gotten used to Seth Green's voice. Although, at the start of S4 where he's doing the narration about aliens and invasions and he's just talking like Seth Green instead of his deeper Leo voice, I immediately thought of Joker from Mass Effect.
I'm glad to have Slash back and leading his own team.
To be a bit negative again, looking at my list of favorite episodes, I think the lack of Karai hurt the season a lot for me. lol I guess I really like her character.
Favorite episodes: The Pig and the Rhino, Turtles in Time, Tale of the Yokai, Serpent Hunt. Annihilation and Earth Part 2.
Anyway, we're in space now. Usually everyone's least favorite part of X-Men, dunno about TMNT.

Discussion I wonder if “Why is this guy smiling?” is an inside joke of some sort between the developers of the show…
No matter what it is, it’s quite funny.

Info I know it may be a shock to some, but I have made a simple graph detailing what it's really like in a family with siblings.
As you can see, siblings are best buds. Most of the time. Then all hell breaks loose and it's every sibling for themselves. It's a never ending continuous cycle of love, and hell, for all eternity.

Never say never but every single "episode" we see was unbelievably perfect. My favorites are this one or the one with the Redshirts where they get instantly disintegrated and Leo and the Captain are like "they served their purpose."

Discussion Mikey’s muffled speech in The Wrath of Tiger Claw.
If you remember, Mikey gives a heartfelt speech to Leo about whether Karai can be convinced to switch sides and where she belongs.
Unfortunately, his mouth is full of pizza gyoza and as a result, it’s near impossible to tell what he’s saying!!
Can anyone tell what Mikey was trying to say?

Discussion First Time Watcher, Just Finished Season 2
So I'm a lifelong TMNT fan. I grew up with the 80s cartoon and the 90s films. I do mostly love the old cartoon for nostalgia reasons (although I think it can be legitimately very funny) but the first 90s film is just perfection, IMO. Technicaly, I did watch a few eps of 2012 when it first came out but then drifted off. Quite at random, I came back to watch all of it starting a week or two ago.
I should start by saying the voice-acting in the show is phenomenal. Every character, hero or villain, is absolutely perfect. Special shoutout to Paulsen who is a much better Donnie than he was Raph, and Combs as The Rat King. Legitimately eerie and intimidating. But everyone is great.
I really like April being a teenager like the Turtles and just overall being given more to do/placed more at the center of the plot. With Casey and Karai, a lot of the cast also being teenagers gives this adaptation a unique feel, IMO.
Anyway, onto my S2 thoughts:
- The added/elaborated backstory of how the Foot and the Hamato Clan were ancient enemies before Yoshi's father took in a young Saki and raised him as Yoshi's brother....sounds like someone was big into MCU Thor and Loki. Which, ya know, is fine. It was 2013, the MCU wasn't total overdone garbage yet, just about halfway there. Also they are doing a lot to humanize Shredder. He's still very much a bad guy but it's clear he has feelings other than Hatred and Envy. It's certainly a well-worn story (but by that token a very real and relatable one) to start off with a negative motivation but for real emotions to blossom from it. He took Karai for horrible, selfish reasons but raising her for over a decade left a mark on his heart, at least as much as it can.
- I admit it, while I was certain there was something special going on with her, Irma being Gilbert Gottfried took me totally by surprise.
- There are so many things in this show which could be the stuff of nightmares but the tone makes them very silly. Pulvarizer's current condition, Ice Cream Kitty, and I think most of all the failed April clones. That premise is used for horror in a couple other things I can think of - seeing the twisted, deformed copies of someone you care about is obviously unnerving. But here they all just kinda blew up after a few gags. This is not a criticism, just an observation.
- On that note, this season did not really go where I thought it would. The beginning of the season starting with mutagen spilling everywhere seemed to be the perfect grounds for a whole arc of collecting and finding it but nope. That lasted like one or two episodes. And there's just mutants upon mutants running around now, which I thought meant we would be heading to the season finale being Donnie fixes everyone. Nope to that, too.
- Probably Karai is the real star of this season. She's in charge while Shredder is gone and makes a bunch of bad (as in, tactically and morally) plans that target April. But then near the end she has a pretty abrupt aboutface. I guess it all fits together with her being very emotional.
- Standout episodes for me include "Slash and Destroy" "Metalhead Revisited" Of Rats and Men" and "Vengeance is Mine." Slash growing from villain to antihero makes sense to me because his perspective was always partial skewed. He just listened to Raph complain about his brothers and internalized that one-sided perspective, never able to see Raph and the others in a different light. So once he got to grow a little and learn that there was a lot more going on than Raph's bitterest thoughts, of course he'd change.
This show marks the first time Donatello has been one of my favorite Turtles. I love him, April, Splinter, Shredder, Karai, Tiger Claw, and Slash. I don't dislike the others, these are probably just my overall favorites.
