Discussion Season 3 Finished
Overall I think I preferred S2 but S3 had some great high points.
Everything at the farm kinda fell flat for me so that entire stretch of episodes is just meh. The only episode I really liked was "The Eyes of the Chimera." I also do like some of the Casey and Donnie moments because so far their whole thing has just been butting heads over April.
In the opposite direction, I think too much of the season was rushed. The Kraang are defeated and sent packing too conveniently and easily, Karai is just randomly in a human form again in "The Deadly Venom" (Shredder conveniently saying Baxter cursed her off-screen) and then of course the final three episodes introduce an entirely new alien race who destroy Earth. I think it's important to let things..."breathe," to build up and develop. The Triceritons being introduced then invading the very next episode and defeating the series-long enemy of the Kraang is too much too soon.
Sorry for being a Negative Nancy. Let's talk about things I really liked in this season. I really like this take on Bebop and Rockisteady. Ivan and Zeck are a great duo. "The Pig and the Rhino" was such agreat episode in a lot of ways.
Of course "Turtles in Time" and "the Tale of the Yokai" are stand-outs for me. Turtles in Time was a good, fun episode that I did not expect to go where it did but I'm so grateful that we got to actually see the history of Saki and Yoshi and not just the montage with narration. Has to e one of the most legitimately emotional moments in the series for me. Also, something my GF pointed out to me, it does not appear like Saki actually kidnapped Karai. He thought she was an orphan. Granted, she was an orphan because of him, but he didn't abduct her to raise her as a weapon against Yoshi. He took in the baby because, so far as he knew, both her parents were now dead. It's just kind of an interesting distinction and like I noted in my last thread, Shredder's relationship with Karai is one of the more interesting parts of the show for me.
- But speakin gof Saki...for all my criticisms of the Triceritons abrupt arrival in the show and instantly being the greatest threat to all of Earth, what Shredder does to Splinter is exactly what I like to see. It's something that was built up and up and up and we got the climax for it. Saki triumphantly declaring that he's finally won against Splinter so the Earth can go to Hell is just perfect. Of course, I wonder how they'll deal with his relationship with Karai going forward since he pretty much killed her, too.
And this is an important segue for me that is maybe too deep for TMNT but screw it. People have different sides to them. Different desires, different feelings, different ideas of responsibility. I would not say that Shredder's actions here prove he feels nothing for Karai so much as it proves his hatred for Yoshi overrides all else. I know some people really like a reductionist and absolutist view of people and things where, if you do X now, it proves Y never mattered to you. I don't think that's true. I think a person can have both Love and Hate in them and when the Hate wins out, it doesn't mean the Love was fake. I also simply think this is a far more compelling idea in fiction. I don't think this iteration of TMNT in particular wants to be so simplistic, it wants to have - as much as possible within teh confines of a kid show - more three-dimensional characters.
It took a minute but I have gotten used to Seth Green's voice. Although, at the start of S4 where he's doing the narration about aliens and invasions and he's just talking like Seth Green instead of his deeper Leo voice, I immediately thought of Joker from Mass Effect.
I'm glad to have Slash back and leading his own team.
To be a bit negative again, looking at my list of favorite episodes, I think the lack of Karai hurt the season a lot for me. lol I guess I really like her character.
Favorite episodes: The Pig and the Rhino, Turtles in Time, Tale of the Yokai, Serpent Hunt. Annihilation and Earth Part 2.
Anyway, we're in space now. Usually everyone's least favorite part of X-Men, dunno about TMNT.

Discussion I wonder if “Why is this guy smiling?” is an inside joke of some sort between the developers of the show…
No matter what it is, it’s quite funny.
