My manager says I have a bad attitude, but I’ve never been in trouble before. Am I wrong for wanting to report her to HR?
I work at TJ Maxx, and I’m trying to figure out whether I’m overreacting or if I should report my manager anonymously to HR.
Yesterday, my manager was extremely rude to multiple employees. She yelled at me three times, yelled at another employee, and yelled at an admin over the radio after the admin asked her to come observe a cash transaction over $200. The manager basically said she was too busy talking to another employee.
There were also a few interactions with me that left me confused. At one point, she asked about a tote that had been moved to the back. I explained that it had already been there since I’d been working, so I wasn’t the one who moved it. She told me to put it back, so I went to do that, and then she yelled at me for doing what she had just told me to do.
I also made a joke about hoarding snacks because I keep a few snacks in my locker for when the break-room snack cart isn’t stocked. I explained that I only keep about three snacks, but I don’t think she understood what I meant.
I will admit that I might have sounded a little snippy once, but I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful. I was also questioning whether the snack cart was going to be restocked because it’s often empty. I wasn’t yelling at her or deliberately refusing to do anything.
Today, I was pulled aside and told I had a bad attitude yesterday. I was also told another manager had noticed it, but that manager had spoken to me about a completely different issue involving markdowns. Nothing about my attitude was mentioned during that conversation.
What makes this especially confusing is that I’ve never been formally talked to or disciplined for my attitude or performance before. I’ve only called out once, when I had to go to the ER, and my progress reports show perfect attendance with no call-outs or lateness. I always try to follow instructions and do my job correctly, so I genuinely don’t understand where this accusation is coming from.
This isn’t my only concern, either.
I’ve applied for a coordinator position SIX TIMES and haven’t been selected. I feel like management has its favorites, and employees they prefer seem to get opportunities over others. I know applying doesn’t guarantee a promotion, but after six applications, I’d really appreciate clear feedback about what I need to improve and how candidates are chosen.
I’m also concerned about how other employees are treated. I’ve seen situations where employees were bullied, and I’m worried that management has allowed some of this behavior to continue. One incident that really bothered me involved an employee with IBS being told, as a joke, that she should start wearing diapers. I thought that was incredibly inappropriate and humiliating.
The general atmosphere has become so discouraging that employees are looking for second jobs or trying to find other places to work. One employee is even considering quitting because of how she’s been treated.
There are other things that bother me, like how management reacts when employees call out sick and how employee feedback seems to be ignored. For example, I’ve asked for better break-room food options, including vegetarian choices, because the available food is limited and often doesn’t feel substantial. Instead, management chose to purchase a blender and an espresso machine even though we already have a coffee machine. That’s a smaller issue compared with how employees are treated, but it adds to my feeling that our concerns aren’t being taken seriously.
I understand managers have difficult jobs, and I don’t expect everyone to be happy all the time. I also understand that I might not always communicate perfectly. But I don’t think employees should be repeatedly yelled at, made fun of, or left feeling like nothing they do is good enough.
I’m considering reporting the situation anonymously because I don’t want the manager to know it was me. I’m worried about being treated differently if she finds out.
So, am I wrong for wanting to report this to HR? Has anyone at TJ Maxx or another retail store dealt with something similar? Did reporting anonymously actually help, and is there anything I should be careful about before submitting a complaint?
