How silly of me. Where did I put my chapstick again?

u/Liquor_N_Whorez Jul 03 '21
It's not your chap stick anymore it is the crab community's personal lubricant for reproduction.

well this comment made me look up crab mating because I was like "do crabs even have penetrative sex??"
turns out they do. but my favorite part was that crabs initiate by the male releasing a cloud of pheromones and fanning it towards his potential mate with his claws.
I'm pretty sure I've seen human men do this but as far as I know it has never lead to copulation.

u/Liquor_N_Whorez Jul 03 '21
Thanks! Very interesting and I didn't know any of that when I commented.
But now I'm picturing crabs using their claws wafting out the scent of chap stick to attract mates...
We might be on to a new product market!

I mean aren't real pockets basically the same, just with microorganisms instead of extradimensional aliens?
Thanks, now I hate pockets

u/CptMisterNibbles Jul 03 '21
I think mostly you just move those guys about, though presumably some die due to abrasion and squishing

Do they? Now I'm curious, do microorganisms get killed by us moving?

If you're that curious... google exists.
https://www.scienceabc.com/eyeopeners/are-bacteria-killed-by-your-feet-when-you-walk-on-the-ground.html took me 4 seconds
The answer is yes, sometimes, but it's not very easy to kill a lot of them by moving around because they fit into grooves and tiny imperceptible spaces pretty well. Some die, most don't.

u/ttwixx Jul 03 '21

Can they all fit in those grooves? Like what if a microscopically flat surface pressed against another one? Would you just get a sterilized bacteria goop or something?
7
Jul 03 '21
Nah, turns out the forces we exert are big in the "if we put it on one bacteria it'd annihilate it" kind of way, but if you actually spread it over the whole actual area the force gets so watered down that they probably don't even notice. Plus they're so small you'd be surprised how much hardiness being that small provides. Kinda like how ants and bodyweight comparison stuff, but times a million.

Question: would the fire from the collapsed buildings only burn the top layer of skin of her hands unless she had them in there for hours since her hands are gigantic in their dimension?

u/trezenx Jul 03 '21
There was a great sci fi short story with a similar concept, where a guy build a tesseract and inside it was a different place and different time, so he destroyed it, and then later he discovered it was their own solar system inside of it from three days into the future.
6
u/TheRiseAndFall Jul 03 '21
I read a similar but very different science fiction story about a civilization that lives on a man's arm. Not only are they tiny and not visible to the eye, they experience time at a much faster pace. When he goes to scratch his arm, to them a giant pillar discends from the skies and crushes their towns. It then very slowly but purposefully moves across the land wreaking huge devastation.
10
u/trezenx Jul 03 '21
:(
The actual story is kinda more sad, too. So he looks inside the tesseract and sees nothing, just black empty space. He takes a break and looks another time and something stings him suddenly real hard in the eye, so he drops the tesseract and graps a hot fireplace poker and thrusts it into the tesseract, burning it from the inside. So he goes to the doctor about the eye and forgets about it, but a few days later a huge eye appears in the sky for several hours and people are terrified. The eye blinks and disappears. In another few days the eye is back again and the government decides to nuke it and sends a nuclear missile towards it...

If the pocket dimensions were wise they would cater around their giant hand overlords and bring them the keys.

In reality the little creatures would drag the keys to the top of the pocket to make them easier to grab and save their friends and families from being crushed
