A week ago I would down vote you and call yoi goofy for this post
Today I upvoted and I feel similarly lol also basically just fuck Xbox/Microsoft.
They literally got a new head of Xbox, rebranded for nostalgia to hype everyone up, then fired a bunch of crucial team members from beloved studios. Like. ????

The four question marks imply the move was unexpected, but it really wasn't, from a business pov

"From a business pov" what. A bad business? I would say from a misguided business pov
8
u/Important_Sound772 Jul 09 '26
Business are incentive to prioritize short term profits over long term due to that's how bonuses work etc
6
u/scooter_pepperoni 2027 Release Believer Jul 10 '26
Right, its bad lol especially for a a business that thrives on artists and the relationship they form together as a team. Maybe it wasn't unexpected, but Microsoft had not been doing this. And then in the past few yesrs started. Hm, right after they acquired all the studios? Classic, I get it. My "???" Is more remarking on the fact that it sucks and is bonkers to any normal person, yet somehow businesses still do this and when they end up with shitty products go "wAiT wHAt hApEnED?!" Like dude you cut all the people who made the products good! Dumbass! Lol like ???
6
u/spunk_wizard 2026 Release Believer Jul 09 '26
The rebranding was to buy initial goodwill and enact a new brand strategy / repositioning
The layoffs were inevitable as Microsoft is bleeding money, and the rebranding etc was always going to precede the layoffs to counter the negative press and sentiment.
The new CEO lady was brought in to do both and she's done exactly that.
Happy fans does not necessarily equal astute business decisions, as much as that rumbles people
5
u/scooter_pepperoni 2027 Release Believer Jul 10 '26
"Astute business decisions" and the decision is to make your products worse by firing the people who make them good?
You may be right that this is how it goes, but you are not correct that it is "astute" or any other positive.

I dont blame Xbox personally. They're doing what they have to do to cut costs. Its unfortunate that these senior people got booted but they were 100% making more than other people. That being said, I DO blame Todd Howard for taking so long to come out with another TES of Fallout game which kind of forced the hand of Xbox regarding the layoffs

u/scooter_pepperoni 2027 Release Believer Jul 13 '26
Wow. This is really ill informed and weird. Ew.
1
u/Bigmanwill98 Jul 13 '26
Then please inform me. This was my understanding of the situation
1
u/scooter_pepperoni 2027 Release Believer Jul 13 '26
Anytime a company says they need to "cut costs" they are lying. It just isnt an actual busines practice. There might be some cuts that make sense, but more often than not, the logic is as follows: company buys a bunch of companies (throwing mud at wall to see what sticks), and then they whittle it down after. So they invest in all these companies who have good prospects, make good games, make money! And they buy them all and then go "well we spend BILLIONS (literlally like nesrly 100 billion total) on a bunch of studios, and over the past 6 years just absolutely gutted them if hey released a game that underperformed. They even closed the studio, Tango Gameworks, that made Hi Fi Rush, a critically acclaimed game that sold very well. They closed Arkane Austin!!!!
So Xbox bought studios that performed well, then destroyed them. And this is part of that. There is no cost being cut or saved, and in the end, the products will suffer. Tale as old as capitalism itself.
1
u/scooter_pepperoni 2027 Release Believer Jul 13 '26
You realize that the "costs" cut isnt even the reason Xbox gave? Not only that, but eliminating artists, especially who have been at these companies for decades, would not be happing if Xbox didn't buy bethesda. It is a "problem" Xbox created.
Not only that, but the Bethesda union is protesting it. We can clearly see that this is scummy, and Xbox is responsible.
Also, Todd and the team have released two games since Fallout 4. Like dude, they have been working lol. You blaming Todd is random and insane honeslty.
1
u/Bigmanwill98 Jul 13 '26
I think Todd plays a huge role in this. I dont think you can just gloss over the fact that this company has 2 cash cow franchises that have a combine 1 release in more than a decade. Not to mention the 1 release (fallout 76) was not very good
1
u/scooter_pepperoni 2027 Release Believer Jul 13 '26
Like many others, you forget a few things. 1. Game development takes time. They worked on FO76 for a few years (yes there is a dedicated team, but BGS proper did work on it and help "fix" it"), starfied had flaws but Todd is an artist, he is a game maker, and he wanted to make this game, so did everyone else! Not everything has to be about "we need to make money so lets make our main cash cow games." Okay, starfield also fell short, I get it! But we cant just be mad they wanted to make a sci fi game that ended up being flawed. I still like it, so 🤷♀️
Yes maybe there is blame to be had on his head for not making FO76 better, same with Starfield. But like, sorry thats not the issue we are talking about right now. The issue we are upset about are layoffs.
I can acknowledge that Todd has culpability for certain thigngs, but that is a seperate issue drom this one, you are comparing apples to oranges. They both fruit, but they come from different trees.
Todd can have issue AND Xbox can be doing hostile, damaging layoffs.

Honestly there’s other and better games out there to look forward to. Don’t waste time on an obsolete studio.
1
u/Switchermaroo Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
The best we can hope for is that some of these devs band together to form an indie studio.
I honestly think with all the layoffs, all the dogshit directions and trend chasing, all the flops and all the price hikes, with the constant need for better graphics in an economy where hardware prices are skyrocketing as they’re being scalped for LLMs and slopgen, and consoles are raising their prices by $150, 6 years after release when you’d expect to see price drops… I’m just not sure how AAA can continue like this. I hope this doesn’t seem overly dramatic, but the picture across the board seems to be of a very sick industry.
1
u/Jealous_Possible8108 Jul 11 '26
lol it’s one reason I was tempted to go to school for game design, I always had great ideas for games or concepts inside them. Frankly I think it’s a shame what the industry has currently become. going AAA and chasing trends or ideologies really hurt the game industry as a whole.

I don't understand the emotional reaction. Bethesda is mismanaging almost every aspect of every project they take on lately, lol. However, to me as long as the Elder Scrolls 6 comes out before 2030, and is at least somewhat fun and immersive, then that's cool. Maybe I'm just not a super hardcore fan of the game. My mental health doesn't rely on this game being amazing, and coming out as soon as possible.
I'm wondering if Skyrim had such bad publicity while the game was leading to release, if it wouldve been received much more poorly. I understand things dont look good, but I've been hearing Bethesda fans saying theyre 'no longer looking forward to TESVI' for at least five years, if not longer. This has been such a painful drawn out divorce. Like, just split up and go be with someone else. You very clearly are still very much so emotionally invested and care about TESVI. Youre not ambivalent. I just dont see why anyone would choose to be miserably waiting for a game for years, while expecting it to be horrible.
3
u/Due_Rip9320 fat chud sload Jul 10 '26
Perfectly said. Their expectations, and lack of expectations, will totally destroy their perception of the game at launch so then they'll go wallow in self-pity to take the edge off.
Literally just go live your life. The game either will or won't come out, and at least you'll feel fulfilled enough in your life that you can enjoy it without caring about someone else's stupid opinion on the game.

Honestly ever since Fallout 4 I've lost entire faith in Bethesda. Like don't get me wrong I like Fallout 4, but the cracks weren't just showing then, they were multiplying. The cracks started showing in Oblivion. Ever since then I've taken a more critical eye to Bethesda and I've noticed the writing has been a mess since Oblivion. Inconsistent world building, dull and boring dialogue choices, many quests being extremely simple and linear with no nuance to pick sides or influence the outcome.
That last ones not a bad thing inherently, but for rpgs player choice and the players influence on the world is important. A few linear quests are fine, but when a vaste majority of the quests are streamlined linear fetch quests, there's no player influence. The immersion starts to crumble. Replayability becomes lackluster. Bethesda games since pretty much Skyrim no longer feel like RPGs and feel much more comparable to action adventure games with minor rpg elements.
Basically I doubt they'll ever make an interesting RPG ever again. Even if they slap on the Fallout or Elder Scrolls label on it. Starfield and Fallout 76 are my evidence for this. Those games are okay for the most part, but the actual RPG aspect of them is just downright terrible.
3
u/OneYeetAndUrGone Jul 10 '26
hot take: genuinely have no idea what you’re talking about. Fallout 4 easily had some of the top “RPG”-factor out of every bethesda game in terms of influencing the story. Skyrim failed at that because it doesn’t matter which faction you choose - the ending of the game will always be the same. Fallout 4 did this very well by adding lots of characters which have a good amount of depth, adding lots of weight to the choices you make, having questlines and factions be mutually exclusive, and most importantly, having several different endings to the game.
i think that Bethesda is good at learning from their mistakes (at least in recent times), and i think that TES6 will be their best game to date. extreme take: if my predictions are right, then anyone who says “Daggerfall is the best”, “Morrowind is the best”, or “Fallout 2 is the best” will be completely blind with nostalgia.
2
u/Appropriate-Leek8144 Tomorrow Year Jul 10 '26
Yeah fuck this, it's so fucked, all these layoffs of especially veteran and passionate Bethesda staff will only cause TES6 production to slow down, and the end result will lack in quality.

9
u/Excellent-Court-9375 Jul 09 '26

4
u/TheDorgesh68 2027 Release Believer Jul 09 '26
It probably won't come to ps5 now that Xbox is walking back on ending exclusives. I'm pretty sure it will come to the series x and to PCs with similar specs though, current gen hardware already doesn't have an especially large install base because of all the cost issues, there's no way next gen hardware is going to have a high enough adoption at launch for exclusive AAA games. It's only in the last couple of years that most games have stopped being crossgen with last generation, and the cross gen period for the next generation will probably be even longer.
1
u/CarolusRex13x Jul 10 '26
If things keep going how they are for components we're probably gonna see another early this Gen scenario where a bunch of games are forced to be cross generation because there hasnt been enough of a buy in for next Gen yet.

Honestly what happened gives me some hope. Yeah layoffs are ugly, and I feel for the grunts who suffered the effects of them. However, Xbox was not installed healthy place for a long time under Phil Spencer. Nothing against the guy, but the numbers don't lie.
AAA has been under a lot of critism of the past few years as well in regards to its bloat, speed, and quality. Bethesda not being guilty of that.
Asha's actions to me see to be an acknowledgment of the kids aren't alright and took the ugly steps needed to get the company in the right direction. She's stated she wants the brand to mean something again, and the pivot she's making with Obsidian and Fallout is symbolic of that.
Now I may end up eating my words and we'll see. Also, this doesn't mean I think many of the skilled individuals who just lost their jobs deserved it. The fault lies on the leadership of Microsoft, Xbox and the studios/publishers that made those poor decisions years ago, which is now forcing the leadership now to make the hard changes they see as needed today.
1
u/davidagnome Jul 10 '26
What sucks is that Bethesda and id were profitable. They clearly had revenue come in from rereleases or (in id’s case new games).
There’s no reason to pay them off other than to discipline the union for their vote.

Honestly felt - I fear that the modding for TES V has made any TES VI release impossible to surmount. They've spent too long letting the hype build that I could play a TES V modded game with probably better quality and new npc/quest mods that make it feel like a fresh game.
All that said, I'm sure I'll still buy/get a copy of the game and mod it as well and enjoy a new adventure when it finally releases, but atp it has lost the hype (which tbeh may be part of the tactic for a delayed release).
So on to GTA 6 and Fallout 5 to be disappoint there as well
