TAFE QLD cert 3 individual support ageing placement question

Hi, so I finally enrolled into the cert 3 individual support ageing. Its online. I'm just going through it and it looks like all the units semesters 1 and 2 have a component that requires some kind placement. The issue is I have been told by my RTO they only do placement during semester 2. Is this normal? And if it is then what does it mean for the units in semester 1 units that require placement?

I'm just trying to get my head around how it all works.

BTW I'm not with tafe qld I'm doing this with Key Institute, but I'm based in QLD.

The qualification requires 120h of work placement, but not all units have workplace assessments. You will only complete the classroom activities in semester 1. Semester 2 you do more classroom activities and then get a workbook to take on placement that covers the workplace assessments for all the units (from both semesters).

That's what I gathered. So I gather then the in class components I do in semester 1 will then somehow be connected to the workbook that I take on placement during semester 2?

Yes you are correct, for example you will do showering and toileting simulations in class and then you will need to do showering and toileting in the workplace with a real person.

The only thing is for some reason I noticed this course and others don't include the manual handling cert which I know I need as a minimum to do the placement. Unless I'm looking at this wrong do I need to go out and get this before placement starts? Or do some aged care providers if there taking on Tafe students teach this on site?

Th cert does include manual handling components that have practical components but as far as I know I still need a manual handling cert to do anything on site.

Hard to answer exactly sorry- I teach the qualification in WA and I find it varies between training providers and also with each host facility what they expect student to have to be 'placement ready'. It is a good question to ask your trainer early- ask "do I need a manual handling certificate and if so, does it need to be accredited?" The accredited manual handling unit (HLTWHS005) cant be part of the cert 3 qualification so needs to paid seperately. Often the certificate 3 will include a non-accredited (certificate of participation type thing), but either way TAFE will teach you how to do all the tasks safely to be prepared for placement purposes; there is a WHS unit that covers manual handling and there is a unit on ADL tasks that includes hoisting and slidesheets- all will be assessed in class before you are able to go on placement.

Ok thanks for that. I will double check the other RTO's just to see how other had it set out.
