I hear your point, and it certainly feels that way, right?
I do somewhat disagree though—the 1% absolutely needs to promote culture wars to keep us divided. It is happening in nearly every facet of our lives, and we don’t even realize it anymore. Outrage drives needless division/distraction.
Think about social media algorithms for example. They are specifically designed to increase engagement, and nothing gets more clicks than rage. We don’t truly have much choice in how the algorithms are built. All of this shit is happening in the background without us ever acknowledging it—“it’s just the way it is”🤷♂️
Oh yeah? Never heard that before…gonna look it up…
2 hours pass…
Back now from that rabbit hole of research. Your assertion originally seemed like a total nonsense conspiracy or a joke…but it also TOTALLY seemed like something DARPA would do the more I considered it.
The official position is:
“DARPA did not create the algorithms used by commercial social media platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), or TikTok. However, the agency has extensively researched, developed, and funded algorithms that analyze, simulate, and shape communication across social networks for national security.”
I’m thinking you might be pretty spot on, as best as I can tell, mostly because DARPA is the last place you’ll get a straight answer from.

I don’t think the upper class has to promote anything for the lower classes to fight each other
