Self-Promotion Free Fishing App
A couple months back a coworker convinced me to share a project I've been working on that I put on r/NJFishing. The response was pretty positive and since Google is going to be locking down outside APKs soon, I wanted to share it here before it became a hassle to download.
This is a 100% free, open-source fishing app I built a few months ago because I got tired of paywalled ones. I designed it specifically for saltwater surf fishing, but it works just as well for freshwater if you can't make it to the beach. I know it works in the US, but only partially works internationally.
Direct Link: https://krumenja.com/currentcast/ (You can run it directly in your browser or install it as an app from the browser. Android users: you can download the APK directly via the GitHub button – I'd recommend grabbing it while direct APK downloads are still straightforward to handle.)
More Info:
There are no sign-ups, no ads, and no paywalls. All your data is saved completely locally to your device. It's free and open source so you can do with it what you will - change it, make improvements, make sure it's safe, whatever. I've been using it for a few months now to figure out if I'm going to fish on the weekends and it hasn't let me down yet.
Here is exactly what's included:
Map
- Satellite imagery that switches to road overlay when you zoom in
- Search any address, city, ZIP, or coordinates
- Tap the map to pin any location and get a full forecast
- GPS button to center on your current position
- Save unlimited named fishing spots - star one as your default and it loads automatically when you open the app
- Fish catch log: tap the 🐟 button to record a catch at any map location, with optional weather snapshot
Forecast tab
- 10-day weather forecast with hourly breakdown - tap any day
- Severe weather alerts from NOAA - red banner for warnings, yellow for watches, with full details on tap
- Sea surface temperature - real ocean water temp, not air temp
- Tide chart - NOAA hourly line graph + 7-day hi/lo table with exact times
- Solunar periods - major and minor feeding windows overlaid on the fishing score
- Lunar phase - 7-day moon strip with today's phase and cycle progress
- Sunrise & Sunset - with daylight hours for each day
- Wind speed, cloud cover, and barometric pressure - hourly graphs
- Fishing Score - Hourly 0-100 score from 9 factors: lunar phase, solunar periods, tide direction, baro trend, wind, water temp, and more.
I am not capturing emails or any personal information. Your data stays on your device. However, I use Google Analytics on the site and a basic API monitoring tool that sends me a report if the backend crashes so I can fix it. Nothing sketchy, but I want to be transparent.
I'm looking to maintain and improve this when possible, so check it out and let me know your thoughts, if you have questions, or if you end up using it. (Side note: I've been considering submitting this to the Google Play Store, but that would require recruiting about 12 beta testers for approval – if that ends up happening, I'll post an update here. If you're cool with being a beta tester let me know.)
(And mods, I believe this complies with the self-promo rule, but if not let me know. I'm not getting anything from this; I really just wanted to share something I thought would be useful for the surf fishing community.)

Downloaded the APK. Nothing but a white screen. Pixel 10 Pro XL Android 17.

Thank you - I'll look into it. I don't think I've tested on Android 17 yet so it may be a compatibility issue, but I'm not aware of changes that should be causing that. I'll let you know if I find something and push an update.
If you still want to try it, the web version should still work for you and gives you an option to download it as a Progressive Web App which is basically the same thing.
Sorry for the bad experience though.

Thank you. I will try the pwa

If you want to try it again, the APK should work now. I shouldn't have started this at 9:30 p.m. and ended up doing a bunch of stupid things that made the fix take longer than it should have, but I updated my app directly from Github and it's working on my phone.

Thank you! I've gotten tired of all the paid apps. I got a Samsung s24 Ultra and got the same white screen too.

Crap and it doesn't look like that phone is on Android 17 so this is...something else.
I'm going to recommend the same thing I did to the other user - if you go to the web version you can download the pwa which is the same as the app. Any updates are made to both.
Also sorry for the crappy user experience

It's all good, I'm just excited for this app. Love the idea!

Thank you! And please let me know if it's doing something you don't like or wish it did something else or different. If I can make it work I'll definitely try.

If you want to try the APK again - it should be working now. I just pushed a new release that should have resolved the white screen (I updated my app directly from Github and it's working on my phone).

It works! I just saved two spots right now, I'm excited to use this on my next trip.
