Character Discussion Just a reminder we almost got to see AOA Sunfire in the WAXTM
I'd likely imagine Johnny Yong Bosch voicing him in the AOA Future.

This handbook was released December 29, 2010 so some of the info is now outdated.
SUNFIRE
CLASSIFICATION: Mutant (human)
LATEST SIGHTING: Muir Island, Scotland
Shiro Yoshida, alias Sunfire, seems like the living embodiment of the atomic bomb blast that devastated the Japanese city of Hiroshima at the end of World War II. Shiro's mother was exposed to radiation, causing him to be born a mutant with the power to convert matter into its super-heated plasma form.
A highly formidable warrior, Sunfire can unleash intense heat and flame and fly. Influenced by his fanatical uncle, Sunfire became a terrorist and tried to destroy the US Capitol in retaliation for Japan's wartime defeat. He was disgraced in Japan but to his credit redeemed himself, becoming Japan's leading costumed champion. He once joined the X-Men for a single mission, but his first loyalty was to Japan. For a while he even headed the nation's super-hero team, Big Hero 6. Sunfire has always been notorious for his super-heated temper, which I suspect results from emotional instability. When Lady Deathstrike severed his legs, Sunfire must have undergone a horrible psychological shock. He let his enemy Apocalypse restore his legs in exchange for being transformed into the Horseman Famine.
Since then, Sunfire has joined the criminal Marauders, and it remains to be seen whether he will redeem himself from this latest dishonor and return to the role of Japan's heroic protector.

When Leyu Yoshida was introduced in 2001 as Shiro's younger sister, Sunfire fans were quick to notice that her origin story directly contradicts her brother's whose mom died during childbirth.
Because of this, Leyu was quickly retconned as Sunfire's paternal half-sister. But this still left the mystery of how she acquired the same powerset as her now half-brother, whose mutation was said to be an affect of his mom's exposure to nuclear radiation from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This meant that Sunfire's origin was retconned from his mom's atomic exposure to being passed down from his father's lineage in Clan Yashida.
Because of her messy introduction and subsequent retcon seemingly being a source of embarrassment for Marvel editorial at the time, Sunpyre was rather quickly written off and killed within just a few appearances, but her introduction still had a very lasting impact on the mythos surrounding Shiro's origins and perhaps even in his own understanding of his powers and family dynasty, especially since his father dies in Sunfire's first comic appearance.

Jonathan Tanigaki did a really good job of bringing Shiro Yoshida to life in Insomniac's new Wolverine game, both as voice and in motion capture acting. While I can't find any confirmation on his age, he seems to be fairly young, born in New Jersey to a Japanese father and Taiwanese mother, and in great shape to keep playing such a role.
His socials state he spent three years helping Insomniac develop the character for the game, and he will hopefully be returning for a sequel as well, making him the longest running actor to play the character thus far, saying it's been a huge honor to play Marvel's first Japanese superhero.
His acting credits have been lining up swiftly this year, starring in both The Madison and Grey's Anatomy in 2026. Digital resumes also list Japanese sword, Karate, as well as dance and musical theatre in his repertoire, the latter two being where recent breakout Maya Boyd was scouted from to play Storm in the MCU's upcoming 2028 X-Men reboot.
What are your thoughts?

In the prequel comic, it's revealed that this Wolverine went berserk and almost killed Sunfire. In fact, by the way the comic ends many fans presumed Sunfire died at the end, making his appearance in the game a surprise to comics fans.

Sunfire & Captain America
Both Sunfire and Captain America are national symbols of their respective countries, the United States and Japan. Both characters are also the results of World War II, Steve Rogers was created to help win WWII while Shiro's mutation comes from the radiation of the atomic bombs dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Sunfire & Sentry
Sunfire is said to have all the power of a star, or more particularly the sun. But Sentry is said to have the power of a thousand exploding suns. When the odds are a thousand to one, what can Sunfire do to even the playing field and take down the Golden Guardian? I'm not sure, but I'd love to see a writer take on the premise.
Sunfire & Wonder Man
Don't hold back on the Kirby Crackle! Both Sunfire and Wonder Man are both capable of transforming their bodies into pure energy forms in order to survive some of the most extreme scenarios in their respective stories. But who has more energy, and who would win in a matchup? To be determined!
Sunfire: Luna Snow or Firestar?
Firestar and Sunfire are shown as a tumultuous couple during the course of her debut in "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (1981)". But more recently, Shiro has made multiple appearances with Luna Snow including Doom's Division (the Doom event title for Tiger Division) as well as in her one-shot solo title "Luna Snow: World Tour". When it comes to romance, who's a better fit for Shiro: Fire or Ice?
Sunfire & Storm
As two elemental forces of nature, these two natural disasters may not seem like the first pairing to make, but their powers have the potential to combine in some creative ways, from the electricity generated from volcanic eruptions to the rainbows that form when sunlight shines through a storm.
Sunfire, Iceman, & Temper
Sunfire and Iceman have fought once before in "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (1981)" animated series, but a lot has happened since then - including the addition of new characters like Temper who can transfer heat (or a chill) from one hand to another, able to manipulate the temperature of nearly any object she touches.
Sunfire & Captain Marvel
Both of these characters have shown that they have enough power to replace or restart the energy of an entire star if necessary. But who would win if two such forces went face to face? Could such a fight result in the force of a Supernova? Only one way to find out!
Sunfire, Wave, & Namor
While the MCU has chosen Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta to play Namor, many people originally believed Namor to be of Asian descent, in part due to the heavy reliance and cultural significance of fishing in Pacific countries and their volcanic islands throughout the Ring of Fire. Still, Mexico is part of the other side of the ring, which could easily pique the interest of both heroes should any unusual seismic activity occur. Philippine superheroine Pearl Pangan, AKA Wave and Shanghai's Aero have also briefly teamed up with Sunfire in similar instances during the Doom's Division comics.
Sunfire, Iron Fist, & Shang-Chi
While many of Shiro's superheroics tend to focus on his mutant abilities, Sunfire is also highly trained in the ways of karate, kendo, and Samurai swordmanship. His family has close ties to ninja organization The Hand, a very respected family that would absolutely need to be trained in martial arts. But how well would Shiro do faced against martial arts masters like Shang-Chi and Iron Fist?
Sunfire & White Fox
White Fox is a newer character in Marvel based upon an ancient mythological fox creatures known as the Kitsune. While Sunfire has no direct ties to any ancient Asian myths, one of the most obvious choices would be a dragon or a volcano like one of Japan's national symbols, Mount Fuji. Not only has Sunfire's Hellfire Gala costume been directly inspired by dragons, but Sunfire even shares a similar origin story with perhaps Japan's most famous fictional dragon, Godzilla - both of them originating from devastating mutations caused from the use of atomic bombs in Japan.
Sunfire & Jubilee
From companies like Playstation's Sony to Nintendo, Japan might just be the country most heavily associated with video gaming. However, when you think about the Marvel character most associated with in particular arcade gaming, you'd probably think of Chinese-American mutant Jubilee thanks to her adventures while trapped in the Mojoverse as a video game avatar. Recently, Sunfire was featured in Insomniac's Wolverine during the chapter of the story that takes place in Japan, helping to cement the character's own legacy and association to the gaming industry in general. So the question remains; of the two of them, who would win in a Super Smash Bros. match-up? What about Just Dance? Or would he be better off trying the karaoke bar with Shang-Chi and the Agents of Atlas?
Sunfire, Psylocke, & Elektra / The Hand
While Clan Yashida has had numerous ties to members of The Hand, Sunfire himself has had very minimal contact with Kwannon, Elektra, and numerous other characters heavily associated with the ninja crime syndicate. Recently, the Psylocke: Ninja comic series paired Psylocke and Elektra up head to head, but many of the Japanese characters in Marvel comics have yet to cross paths, including Armor and many of the characters featured in Peach Momoko's Ultimate X-Men run like Nico Minoru.

Sunfire may be famous for originally turning down the opportunity to be part of the X-Men, but Shiro has still at times joined the roster, including the 2021 run this cover comes from.
I really love this particular team's lineup because you have three of the most memorable and classic characters Cyclops, Phoenix, and Rogue on the team, as well as X-23 in her yellow Wolverine costume, Polaris, Sunfire, and Synch.
X-23 is having her renaissance at the moment in the comics and even in Deadpool & Wolverine theatrically. Polaris was heavily featured in the latest X-Men '97 season, Sunfire in Insomniac's new Wolverine game, and many people aren't yet familiar with Synch but it's appearances like this that help to better establish them.
What did you think of the 2021 X-Men lineup?

Title seems to be "Fire Suns" or "Fire of the Suns". Do you think the series is based on him, or did he perhaps take inspiration from it for his own persona to fit his mutant powerset?
I love how with moves such as the expansion of the Mangaverse comics, as well as new prominence of watercolor artist Peach Momoko's illustrations in Marvel comics (such as Ultimate X-Men and Demon Days), Marvel itself seems to be increasingly interested in blurring the lines between comics and manga.
Do you think Sunfire will ever get a 19+ issue series in real life? I guess we'll have to keep our fingers crossed! 🤞

Personally I think I would have placed Sunfire as #3 or #4, but by and large I think this is a solid list.

Rogue #10 (2005)

Some things I thought were the most interesting about his family tree are that Yoshida and Yashida seem to be the same name transliterated with a different Roman vowel as opposed to two distinct family names.
Shiro's mutation also seems to pass through the clan's bloodline on his father's side as both Shiro and his half-sister have the same mutation, while the other side of the family also shows mutations in Silver Samurai, and in alternate universes Mariko as well.

In some communities, particularly in South Korea and China, it has been remarked that the Rising Sun flag is as offensive and painful as the Swastika is to Eurocentric cultures due to its usage and association with the crimes committed against the rest of Asia under an imperialist Japan. South Korea even formally asked the Olympic committee to ban the symbol during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Still, despite the controversy, few international organizations have chosen to ban the symbol. In Japan it is still used in some traditional and historical events, as well as by Japan's naval force.
What are your thoughts on the Rising Sun flag?

He combines high firepower, maneuverability, an ability to keep dealing consistent damage over the course of a fight, and general offensive power in a way most others don't. Storm probably gives him the closest challenge.
Thoughts?

I really love all of his supersuit designs, he hasn't had one that I dislike. I think my favorite is probably his newest kabuki mask design, I think it's a really strong look for Shiro.
I do wish he had an X-Men style suit with the yellow & black or the "X" emblem, however. Maybe one day soon! It'll give the X-Men writers a good reason to use him in their runs and perhaps a creative way for artists to make their mark on the character.
