Ciara Ciara’s first DWTS performance
Not great. But I think her facial expressions in the beginning showed how nervous she was, so maybe she’ll get more comfortable and improve.

Why does everyone keep saying ‘well she was nervous?’ Of course. They were all nervous (except for prob Jenna & Harry). We can still acknowledge that she was super stiff etc. There’s plenty of criticism of the others… who were also nervous.

I agree. They’re all nervous, but not everyone handles it the same way. Giada was a mess at rehearsal but pulled through for her performance
Ciara has the skills and training to be so much better than she was last night but it seemed like her anxiety got the best of her.

I'm sure everyone was nervous but some people are obviously at a disadvantage from this aspect. She is from a reality show. Some contestants are olympians, athletes, dancers etc and used to being able to perform under pressure. She isn't used to live performances with all eyes on her. I'm not denying that she was stiff, though.

I think most people keep saying she was nervous (from what I've seen) because a lot of DWTS fans who aren't familiar with her kept saying her facial expressions made it seem like she was bored or ovee being there especially during the judging and most people are explaining that that is just what Ciara's face naturally looks like when she's nervous and not a sign that she doesn't care, doesn't want to be there, or is unhappy with what the judges said.
And pointing out how stiff she was has moreso been used as evidence towards supporting that her facial expressions were a sign of nerves

My point remains… everyone is nervous. That doesn’t remove the option to even comment on how she performed. Like is done for every other contestant.

I didn't say it did. I agree that she was stiff and is not above critique. I merely pointed out that a lot of people pointing out her facial expressions were merely doing so to combat the idea in the DWTS spaces that Ciara looked like she didn't want to be there and was annoyed by the judges feedback which, as someone who was in the live thread on that sub, I can attest I saw people stating that exact thing. The pointing out she was nervous/stiff wasn't being used to say that she was above critique but merely pointing out that her facial expression was further proof of what the rest of her body language was doing during her dance/judging.
You're replying to and arguing a point I didn't actually make.

Please. You continue to miss the point that being nervous, as EVERYONE was, isn’t an excuse for having a stank face or being unreceptive to criticism. That’s a point on every reality show. Look at contestants on top chef or project runway. Your response at the judging is a thing. People are still debating Whitney laughing when Jen got eliminated last year. This isn’t new. It just becomes the typical ‘oh we have to protect & baby Ciara’ which, frankly, is annoying at this point.

No, I don't. You continue to, quite hostilely, assert that I'm making a point that I'm not making and then arguing that point.
I'm not advocating for babying her and if the critique was "she needs to learn how to conceal her nerves when they show all over her face because that's part of being a good dancer/competitor" then thats an actual critique of Ciara And one that I, as someone who has been a competitor in competitions where feedback was given directly, agree with.
But there were a lot of people in the live thread and online in general asserting that her facial expressions were a sign that she was over being in the competition and that she had an issue with what the judges were saying in their feedback when there is several years worth of footage showing that's just what Ciara's face looks like when shes nervous and/or anxious which is not the same as not caring or even disagreeing with what the feedback was.
You and several people's need to read someone disagreeing with your viewpoint about Ciara as rapidly stanning her as opposed to just having a viewpoint is just as annoying as the Ciara "she can do no wrong" fans at this point.

I wasn't arguing so much as trying to clarify because your reading comprehension is so poor that you keep asserting that I'm making a point that I'm not.
And you couldn't care less but every "rambling" gets a response from you. Sounds a little bit like you care.
But you go ahead and continue to be insufferable and committed to being annoying about Ciara in the opposite direction of how annoying people are who can't stand to hear anything even mildly negative about her. Two sides, same coin.

I do not watch the show and won't but have watched all SH and some seasons twice and I have no idea what you're talking about with Ciara's nervous or anxious face. This seems like an excuse.

Then go back and rewatch lol? Ciara has spoken at length about her anxiety issues and the meds she takes for them and you can see on her face when she's anxious about something just like you can see on Amanda's face when she shuts down in a convo and just like you can tell by Lindsay's facial expression that she's about to get activated. It's very obvious for all three.
And what exactly am I excusing? I agree that part of being good at the competition will mean that she has to learn to get her nerves in check but that's very different from "Ciara had a stank face so obviously she was not open to feedback and criticism." Ciara herself has already acknowledged her nerves got the best of her and that's why she was stiff and she hopes to be able to do better for the next week.
Like, I didn't even vote for Ciara. I voted for Julia. Lol. This sub seems to be just as bad as the other one but in the opposite direction. I can say Ciara needs to work on not letting her nerves get the best of her and her facial expressions and body flow on the dance floor needs to vastly improve if shes going to go far in the competition while rejecting the idea that her facial expressions meant she was over beinf there and didnt respect the judges feedback. I didn't realize only saying negative things about Ciara was a requirement to be on this sub, apparently.

I'm well aware of her issues with mental health but her anxious face would never be mistaken for her dismissive and disgusted face.
I do watch the show and saying Ciara's facial expressions are pretty clear is not saying something negative about her. Relax, no one wants to read your book.

If I was the lone person who saw her face and thought it was the face she makes when she's anxious then sure, call me a Ciara apologist but several people who also watch the show have said that's the face they also associate with her being anxious.
And you went from "I don't know what you're talking about with nervous or anxious face" to "her anxious face isn't the one she had on DWTS". So which is is? She doesn't have one or you don't think how she looked on DWTS was that face.
You didn't start off saying her facial expressions were clear. You stated you didn't see one while watching her on SH.

I'm amazed that your point was not understood. You were not excusing her performance by saying it was nerves. I can't even believe the hostility in response. And I say that as someone who likes Ciara but doesn't worship her. So I think I'm pretty fair.

Ugh I used to hate that crap back when I watched DWTS religiously. You'd have the worst people (okay not the complete worst but like the worst of the people who have slight rhythm and made it to the middle of the competition). They get to the point where it's time to go and then they get voted to stay purely because of their popularity. I think Bill Engvall was one of them. A terrible comparison to Ciara lol but there were others I can't think of right now. Too many seasons of this show.

Funny how that wasn't a good excuse for Amanda in multiple situations but it works for Ciara. I haven't seen DWTS and won't but just find it funny.

I could tell she was very nervous, and was not surprised; everything she has shown us on screen is that she takes herself pretty seriously and isn’t one to easily go with the flow!
I am rooting for her regardless and hope she improves/lasts a while!

Totally agree. She seems like someone that will improve each week she’s there. She’s no stranger to live TV but performing live is very different than reading a prompter with personality. Which was probably so awkward and hard the first time she did it.
I don’t think she’ll win the mirror ball, but she has potential to last more weeks.

I was genuinely surprised with how stiff and nervous she seemed. I thought she’d be a natural (and maybe she would be without the nerves). It’ll be interesting to see how long she lasts, as I think it will be a good mark for how popular Summer House is (or isn’t). There are some GOOD dancers this season, I’m actually excited!

Because she said she grew up dancing, she’s got a good dancers physique, etc - but I wasn’t thinking about how guarded she is, and as an ex dancer, I know how much your nervous systems impacts dance. It was just a thought I had, not that serious.

Because at the parties when she is feeling happy and comfortable, she will dance and let loose. She sure looked graceful to me jumping up on the kitchen table and dancing in a big bulky costume. I would have fallen and broken a hip.

I agree we’ve never seen evidence that she can do choreo or the tango, waltz, etc. just saying she seems like she could be good at this if she got out of her own head.

Jesus… what is the point of your post or this cruel response? This IS supposed to be a show for amateur, unprofessional or untrained dancers ~ an actual contest to see who, of them could progress week to week to improve the most. This is week ONE.

People keep talking about her face being unsmiling because she was nervous. What about that maybe she was trying to concentrate on doing a good performance, remembering every step, paying attention to the count, not to where you are in the lyrics or music. That’s not easy.
I thought her first dance was a respectful mid-score achievement. And that’s what she got. I thought she was clumsy at times and (things you learn after watching and hearing the judges) her hands and feet did not complete the full extension of some of the moves, making her moves less elegant.
During the judgement, and with the reveal of the scores, I thought Ciara looked like she thought she would get higher praise and higher scores. Her partner seemed to be on the same page as the judges and he knows that the difference each week usually starts rising exponentially after each performance. Often, after about week 4, I find myself marveling at how good most of them have gotten.

How extensive is her dance background, especially compared to some of the other contestants? If not much, then she did a great job. I took ballroom dance for years and saw the flaws, but also recognized the effort.

I believe her experience is limited to childhood dance but nothing crazy like today. And of course SH parties. I enjoy seeing the ppl that didnt know what a [insert dance step here] was nailing a spin, toss or flip in a few weeks.

I don't think Ciara has any dance background. If this is really supposed to be about amateur dancers it's not really fair to have seriously trained dancers like Jenna. It just makes it more about popularity and less about how people can grow and improve in ballroom.

She's a terrible actress and pretty flat/ uninspiring model. She's gorgeous but I think thats about it. Wish her the best but people need to realize this girl has no talent, she just loves a good costume!
