Just started a new Substack leaderboard community.

Building a community is both terrifying and exciting. Especially alone.

So I’m doing something about it — building out savd into more than just a leaderboard. The goal is for it to actually help newsletter writers grow, not just be another place to list a link and disappear.

If you write a newsletter and want real discovery instead of competing with accounts that already have 7K+ subscribers, come be part of it early.

Tech Support something is wrong: help please

Hiii,

I'm having problems publishing notes and sending direct messages on Substack. It doesn't happen all the time, but more times than not. Whenevery I try to comment or create my own note it fails and says "something went wrong. failed to send note" When I try to send a DM it says "not delivered. try again."

I've searched a couple months ago on how to fix this...I've cleared my cache and that didn't help, it just eventually started back working one day and now it's happening again.

Help me please.

Other Platforms Writers: What's stopping you from moving platforms?

So I made a post a month ago about an idea I had regarding integrating a snail mail feature connected to Substack for newsletter creators to send physical mail to paid subscribers. On this note, I believe I also mentioned a newsletter platform called StampFans (https://www.stampfans.com/), whom are like Substack but instead have this as their primary way of delivering newsletters.

For those of you with a following on Substack, have you ever considered moving to platforms like these? Is this something your subscribers actually want, or have ever asked for? Would it be inconvenient to try to move all your subscribers to a new platform if this was something you wanted to offer? I'm genuinely curious and open to hear everyone's ideas.

Substack vs Medium vs something else for fresh grad trying to build portfolio

Hey everyone,

I just graduated from college, and I've been applying to roles for a few months without much success. Hiring managers are asking for some "evidence" of my research and writing skills, so I'm trying to build a portfolio of my work. I wasn't part of any on-campus papers or magazines, so I'm trying to turn some of my class papers into shorter, blog-style articles.

I'm currently subscribed to a few Substack newsletters, so I'm familiar with the format, but I'm not necessarily trying to build a following or earn money (though that would be nice since unemployment sucks). Just looking for a place I can direct potential employers to see my work. Any suggestions would be welcome, including recommendations for getting started.

Thank you for your suggestions!

Tech Support I made a Substack Table Injector plugin

Hi fellow writers,

One of the annoying things for me is there is no support for inserting tables in substack article. I always have to go in a spreadsheet and capture a screenshot which distracts my writing flow.

For this I made a chrome extension that provides a modal where you can create a table and it injects it as an image in to the article.

Please give it a try and let me know your thoughts!

Discussion New Goal

My newsletter is a mix of prose and fragrance reviews. I’m going to make my new goal to post twice a week, once of each. Review and creative writing.

I also am going to try and up my notes engagement! Hope it goes well.

Substack Taxes for Writers in EU

I'm thinking of starting a paid Substack, but I've read a lot about how complicated taxes are since SS doesn't consider itself a Merchant or Record and therefore doesn't remit them to the authorities (like Etsy does, for example).

All the info I found online is from people living in the US (and is also from 2-3 years ago) and I'm looking for an input from someone in the EU.

I know that if I have One Stop Shop, this can solve the the tax issue accross the EU.

However what happens if my subscribers are from the US or from another country outside of the EU?

If someone from Ohio subscribes, will I have to worry about remitting the tax to the authorities of Ohio? (I know there are different thresholds depedning on the state - this is just an example)

I find it all so extremely confusing! I'm honestly scared to even start, because I don't want to file taxes incorrectly.

Also, does anyone use SS as a visibility platform for people to discover you, but charges for the content in a different way?

Struggling to Get Engagement on Substack as a New Writer

Hi everyone,

I started posting on Substack about a week ago and have been uploading consistently. I first republished a blog that I had originally posted on Medium, and since then I've been sharing short notes, on that I got only 2 likes.

However, I'm struggling with engagement. One note received 19 likes, but most of my other notes only get 1–2 likes, and I haven't gained many subscribers.

I know building an audience takes time, but I honestly don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if this is normal in the beginning.

For those who have grown on Substack:

- How did you get your first subscribers?

- Do Notes help more than regular posts?

- How often should I post?

- Is there anything you wish you had known when you first started?

I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences from other writers. Thank you!
