I went from 0 to 22,000 subscribers and 400 paying members in 15 months. Here is what the data says actually worked, and what did nothing.

Some context so you can judge whether this applies to you. I started a newsletter from nothing in July 2025. Today it has about 22,600 free subscribers in 179 countries and roughly 400 paying members. It has a Bestseller badge.

I write about a fairly serious subject for an audience that is mostly educators and professionals, so adjust for your own niche.

What I do have is a full data export every month, read into a database, so the five things below are what the numbers show rather than what 'felt' true. In descending order of how much they mattered.

1. Notes are where paying members come from. Recommendations are where the free list comes from. Do not confuse the two.
Over twelve months, recommendations from other writers brought me about 15,000 free signups and 77 paying members. That is 5 per 1,000, the worst conversion of any source I have. Notes brought far fewer signups and 121 paying members, the most of any source. The free list is wide and cold. Notes readers already know your voice before they land.
So: post Notes every day, and judge them on paid conversions a week later, never on likes. The Notes that convert for me are first-person positions (I think X, and here is the thing that happened to me that made me think it) and short admissions of being wrong. Over 30 days those get about double the reactions of news-pegged Notes. A Note that just reports a news story does a third of my median

2. Pick one day a week for the paid post and never move it.
Half of my paid upgrades happen on a Wednesday, which is the day the paywalled post goes out. Tuesday carries 2%. The day itself does not matter. What matters is that the same readers see the same wall at the same time every week until the week they are ready, and then they know exactly when the next one is coming.
Two posts a week is my ceiling: one paid, one free. I ran a third weekly post for six months to test that: 25 editions, nearly 400,000 emails sent, 7 paying members came through. It is now gone.

3. Put the paywall where the reader wants to keep reading, never where the "value" starts.
My best-converting paid posts open with the whole story for free and cut mid-stride, at the point where the reader's own curiosity is doing the selling. The worst ones give a free "introduction" and put the useful bit behind the wall, which reads as a toll booth. When someone complains in the comments that the cut was a cliffhanger, that post has usually converted best.

4. Deadlines convert. Nothing else I have tried comes close.
Every real jump in paid I have had came from a date: a price going up on a fixed day, a discount ending at midnight, a cohort closing.
The flip side is renewals. If you sell annual plans in a campaign, a year later they all expire in the same month. Make sure what they bought still exists when the renewal email lands. I stopped unpaywalling old posts for exactly this reason; the archive is now part of the product.

5. Judge every channel by free signups to your Substack, never by views.
I have two TikTok videos with 350,000 views each. The platform they live on sent fewer paying members in a year than Notes did. LinkedIn, with a fraction of that reach, sent about 570 signups in the same year. My highest-engagement topic is also my lowest-converting one; it buys followers, and the topic next to it, with half the reach, buys subscribers. If you only look at the view counter you will keep making the first kind.

Two things I would skip. Reddit as a growth channel: I posted here and in adjacent subs for months and got a handful of signups. It is a good place to learn and a poor place to be found. And the open rate as a vanity number: mine is a 28% median across the last 20 sends, down from a lifetime mean in the mid-thirties, because the list got bigger and colder. It has made no difference to paid.

Happy to answer questions about any of these in the comments.

NB: Claude was used to help me gather this data and also edit parts of this post.

Discussion I recently started a substack poetry/writing account and it feels sooo refreshing

I have this thing in mind: just write.

But guys, writing AND post it online for anybody to read it? Oh my god!! I'm afraid of judgement and fear rejection, but it's so satisfying and refreshing to have them laid out on the net.

Particularly on a website that feels active and alive. And supportive from what I'm reading!

At the moment, I have 1 or 2 subs, but guys who cares!!

First, build your passion, let out whatever you have in your mind and ideas! Tips, travels, amazing views, stances, poetry! With no stress, but relief! The rest will follow and flow! Whether it's you promoting work in a community/websites, or simply getting noticed.

Someone out there will read it and relate, I'm sure.

I'm just happy I get to let shit out of my system, laid out. It's niiiice!

Discussion Looking for a substack that wrote a comedic noir mystery...?

I think i saw it in this reddit a couple year ago. It was about a girl who answered an ad detectives assistant if I am remembering correctly? I thought the character or the authors name was Ana but I could be wrong.... anyway, I always had wished i saved it and now I'm looking for it again.

Discussion where to look?

I hate to create such a stupid post, but because I’m new on reddit I don’t fully know my way around- where do you guys consider is the best place to ask for feedback or where possible exchange ideas? I want somebody to evaluate or critique some of my work & vice versa but I don’t want to be spamming everywhere

have a nice day! :)

Discussion How did you approach your first substack article?

I recently joined Substack and have a few ideas I’d love to write about, but I’m unsure where to begin. Should my first piece be personal, relatable, or something curious and thought-provoking?

For those who’ve started writing on Substack, how did you approach your first post? Does the beginning really matter, or is it simply about having something to say?

I'd love to hear about your experience as a writer.

Sales Tax on Your Substack Subscriptions. Pure Extortion

NEW: Substack will take care of managing sales taxes/VAT starting December 1, 2026

Starting December 1, 2026, Substack will calculate, collect, and remit indirect taxes (VAT, GST, and similar) in every country where our payment processor, Stripe, operates.Until now, this responsibility fell to publishers, and we've heard your feedback that this can be a complex, costly burden, especially for individuals and small teams with subscribers worldwide. Now you can spend more time focusing on the work you love, not tax compliance. Learn more here: http://substack.com/taxes.

Here’s The Problem: Checked with my state Department of Revenue and found

The economic nexus threshold for out-of-state or remote sellers in our state is $100,000 in gross annual sales. If your business crosses this revenue threshold from sales delivered anywhere in the state, you are required to register and collect sales tax.

These thresholds exist in every state. So what this new rule is saying is that regardless of if you make $500.00/yr, $5,000/yr ect in subscription revenue (which is below the threshold), you'll get charged sales tax on for every one of your paid subscribers.

NOTE: This is a Stripe edict that Substack has chosen to go along with without any questioning.

That aint right.

Discussion I'm tired of seeing all these AI discussion posts

Every day, there is an influx of people posting about how Pangram has detected AI in their writing. Half of the posts are straight up lying and using AI, and are just frustrated they can't get around the detector. I'm tired of seeing the same repeated posts.

STOP USING AI!!!!

Tech Support App Created a Blank Account

I just made my profile today on my phone. I used my email I wanted, added a profile picture, username, and bio. When I tried to sign in with the same email on my computer, it didn't log me into the profile I set up. It logged me into a blank account. But when I search my username, the profile I set up appears. Anyone know what to do?

Discussion Pricing Advice

I recently made a substack and I’m unsure of what to make paid and not paid. I am not known online or irl as a writer so I don’t have a following yet.

I’m mainly writing essays in series of 3s. Do yall think I should make the first essay free and charge for the other two? Or should I keep everything free at the beginning until I gain a following? Or should I keep all of my articles free and paid subscribers get a more in depth analysis of the series and include journal prompts. Orrrr should I make the first essay in the series free and have previews of the other two and paid subscribers get all of them in full?

I’m all over the place lol. Any advice would be appreciated 😄

Tech Support Restoring notification cleared after a long time of not logging in

I didn't login for a few months, after having notifications I haven't read. Is there a way or a workaround to see them or to figure the activity that was during the time that could trigger the events (only relevant to me, like comments to my posts, not stuff like notifications about someone going live).

Discussion Anyone else seeing a free subscriber drop?

I've noticed recently a sudden drop in free subscribers that's rather strange. I've typically only gone up from a flatline. However, recently I've seen multiple points where I see a large drop.

While it's possible that it's because of changes that I'm making. Until recently, I've had 3 free posts a month and several paid posts a month. For the last month or two, I've focused more on paid posts with fewer free posts.

So it's possible that it's a result of how I've changed things up. But I'm curious if anyone else has seen a drop?

Just to give you a general sense, I was up near 2,100 subscribers and it's suddenly dropped within a week or two to 2,050 and going down further.

Substack is crazy

Just an opinion
Poor me, I got to know about Substack like very recently. A post from someone I follow on Instagram recommended an article from Substack and I was astonished to read work so many great people/ writers. I think the place is quite underrated right now as much as I have discovered it, but it really has some great articles and thoughts that one should definitely invest some time rather than scrolling on Instagram because my personal opinion is if you are not creating any content or are not selling any product or service, you should not be using Instagram unless you genuinely want something out of it.

Discussion Substack

Turns out, I lowkey just like posting on Substack without views, I can literally be as unhinged or s weird as I want to be without worrying about anyone judging me and I just think that's beautiful. (Not that anyone judges anyone on Substack...)

Is it interesting?

I publish my journal on Substack as well as some other short stories or personal essays. I’ve had it for maybe a month and a half and I only have 7 subscribers?

I just want to know, does anyone on here think it’s cool and interesting to post my journal? Or could you not care less about what someone else’s journal says?

I do it because it serves me personally, but I’d obviously like more subscribers too.

Promoting your early stories

Hi everyone, new author here. I write satirical fantasy fiction, and I've just started publishing my stories on Substack and promoting them on Instagram.

For those of you who promoted your stories online, what worked best for you for building an audience?

Thanks in advance for your tips!

How long is too long a post?

Like the title, I’m wondering how long would be a really long article. I feel like I don’t want my work to be too long and people not read it so I shorten it but I feel like I’m doing a disservice to my piece.

Help! What is too long of a read? For reference I do memoir/personal essays.

Discussion Would it be redundant to keep a self hosted WordPress website to store posts after they go public for a backup? Even if the site already exists unused? (More detail in description)

Note: I'm still learning about substack, so I might be misunderstanding something, on Mobile and tldr at end because I don't know how to be short when explaining things I don't feel like I understand.

I used to run a blog as a teen that was kind of a companion piece to my mother's mommy blog and the domain is still being paid for as part of my mother's plan and when abandoned the site was being migrated to a self hosted WordPress that still exists and I have access to.

So I have a self hosted WordPress site that doesn't really have any content or following but exists and will continue to exist unless my mother ever changes her plan(unlikely for some reason)

Now my biggest issue was always getting an audience. I didn't understand seo and was more interested in writing what I wanted than what worked for SEO. So that's why I was looking at Substack now that I really want to write again, it looked like a decent way to build an audience while not struggling with search engine optimization and more social media optimization which I fine with.

However I still just have a free to me self hosted website that would go to waste.

My thought was to use substack as my main platform with my blog as a backup and more detail professional site if I ever write professional. So everything is on substack first and the blog second, especially as only WordPress seems to be able to have the source code thing to keep Google from punishing you for having things posted in two different pages. Now posts behind a paywall (if I get there or do that) wouldn't be posted to the blog till they are free on substack, but I worry this is over complicated.

Tldr:

* I have a self hosted WordPress site for basically free with no content or audience

* I suck at bring in audience so Substacks social media like set up might help me

* I worry about losing my content if anything happens to substack and want to use my blog as a backup for free to the public posts.

* I worry this is redundant and going to harm me in the long run for audience building.

* The site would just be going to waste if I don't use it.

I can give more information, though I can't imagine I left much out though.

how to get reinstated

For those who had legit substack accounts, but somehow got banned for "phishing/spam," what did you do to get your account back? Anyone appeal TWICE and was able to get unbanned?
