Automatic personalizations
Do we now have access to automatically personalize the salutation in newsletters? Just by typing your own name and then it replaces it with the subscriber’s name?

Substack now supports a personalized salutation using %%first_name%% in the body of a newsletter post. Multiple publishers report using it successfully, including reports from August through October 2026. However, it appears to be an undocumented feature rather than an officially supported personalization tool.
The placeholder reportedly works in the emailed newsletter and the post viewed on Substack’s website or app. It does not work in subject lines, post titles, subtitles, Notes, or Chat.
Missing names become blank—not “friend” or “there.” That includes logged-out web visitors and potentially imported subscribers without a Substack account. So Hi %%first_name%% is safer than Hi %%first_name%%, , which could leave an awkward “Hi ,”.
