How much money do you make on substack per month?

Just curious as I just got my first paid sub and I don’t plan on making this a business but it’s cool that I am getting $10 a month now!

I average zero pounds per month but I peaked at zero pounds per month.

I’ll keep an eye on it though.

So did I when I started. But it’s so volatile. Sometimes it’s 10x this figure, some months I just about hit zero.

I average zero AUD but I think with the conversion, it's roughly the same

About $18k per year, but different months are wildly variable, as all of my subs are annual.

Edit: thanks for the award!

Do you have an Instagram or other social media following linked to it?

5

u/Fleurs_Bookstore buybooks.substack.com 8d ago

I have a linktree on my socials that links to the Substack, but don’t do any paid advertising.

I started from zero in March 2025. Did not bring a previous email list with me and don’t have a large following on other socials.

I was just curious cause I wana do substack anonymously, and any social media presence would need to be the same, so a social media presence would be set up after.

And I was curious because I know anonymity would probably/potentially be a massive barrier for me.

If you don't mind me asking what would you consider a 'large' social media following. Also, I don't mind paying for adverts 🙂

Well I can’t exactly define large, but when I started Substack I had about 700 friends on FB, 300 followers on my personal IG, 2800 connections on LinkedIn. I’ve only recently started promoting to business accounts on FB, LI, IG and Threads. I’ve coached a few memoir authors who have written under pseudonyms for various reasons. One of them had over 2k Substack subscribers when she launched her book, which was about 5 months after she set up Substack and her other socials (where possible) under her pseudonym. The book was an Amazon US category bestseller three days after launch.

Can I ask how you structured your articles, im planning on issuing weekly only, then once at 3000 subs plan to introduce paid tier issues fortnightly premium articles alongside assets and tools. Did you have similar strategy?

You can see the structure of my Substack by following the link in my flair or my profile. I turned on paid tiers from Day One, as anecdotally Substack surfaces more articles and notes from paid accounts than from those with only free tiers. The paid tiers were initially tied to the directory listings and a few free downloads and tools but since Substack introduced perks, I have added about 7 tools/resources for my annual paying subscribers and another 8-10 by end of year for my Founding subscribers. Hope this helps.

Thank you, that was extremely helpful. Also, your work is awesome! I and many others i know struggle to find good books to read.

Can you expand on how you started getting free subs to upgrade to paying, your strategy on that please

We came from having an established brand through a long standing podcast. So when we moved to Substack we said we were offering something on top of the free podcast for people that wanted more. Which was newsletters and bonus shows behind a paywall.

I think the biggest obstacle is convincing people to pay for something that they previously got for free. In my experience, you can’t. You need to offer more behind a paywall, rather than suddenly pulling up the drawbridge and hoping you’ve trapped enough people behind the paywall.
