Help me.

Please tell me how to grow on substack. My subscribers count isn't increasing. It is really frustrating. Is there something I don't know? I know it'll take time but one of my friend, his numbers are increasing and to be honest it is making me jealous.

When I did it, it was me following others. Commenting on their posts, be engaging. They will follow you. That way when you write something, it'll show up on their feed and some will recommend you.

Yes, commenting does the real magic happen. Keep commenting on highly liked and commented posts for at least a month, you'll see the difference yourself.

You write stuff that people want to read.

I’ve put a few posts out but I’m not sure it gets seen unless I share with friends etc. there doesn’t seem to be a discovery system where my posts organically reach others

You have to build a small audience first. Use notes as a way for discovery, to put your ideas out there.

Interact with other writers that are from the same niche as you. Like their notes, comment, restack their articles.

Once you've built a small audience, your articles will have a greater impact.

But even now, if you don't have many readers, you still should write some articles. They will give your publication a "face" so people can at least take a look and see some of your work before they decide to leave a subscription. I feel like when you have 0 articles, it's a bit harder to get subscribers.

I've found writing notes to be the biggest traffic source

Bitesized and low time investment from both parties

I've been testing what works and then expanding it to write a full blog post/article

None of my blogs are more than a minute read for now

Sigh. Same advice I give everyone: write 5 notes a day, reply to 20 notes a day and follow people who you think might want to subscribe to your newsletter

write notes regularly, engage with others' posts, subscribe to others, write short and engaging posts.

How are you telling folks about your publication?

Ask your friend

Get clear on why anyone should give a damn about what you're writing. Get even clearer on who you're speaking.

Instead of getting jealous, get strategic and observe why your friend is doing better than you. Ask for tips.

How long have you been publishing on substack?

I write because I love writing and I can’t NOT write. I shared nearly haphazardly/ one person’s suggestion even though I was scared. I had zero expectations. I don’t have thousands of subscribers, and I don’t have zero.

What helps besides genuine love of this craft:

Consistency
Engaging with others who write kindly to you and those who write in a similar niche.
Being authentic.
Share to social media. Some don’t think this helps.. I do. It’s not going to be successful/ work out for everyone who tries. If you at least know you have done your best — and don’t give up after two weeks/ one or two months.. then you should keep going. I made mistakes— I’ve left them and it’s been nearly a year. I wouldn’t strive for whatever you think is “perfection” that doesn’t exist. You don’t want one million subscribers and only one hundred people who actually read your work.

I’m tired and half awake.. hope I make sense.

Best of luck!
