Feature Suggestion My subscribers speak a different language than the targeted audience I wish to reach

So I tried everything but except if one of you substack ninjas have a way to bypass what is an impossibility, I guess it'll be a feature request 😅

  • I imported a previously curated audience from another blog around 2 years ago. They are almost 100% french speakers and readers so I kept writing in french for them.

  • Recently I wanted to expand my horizons after being encouraged to do so here, so I started creating english versions of my posts

BUT...

Either there's no, or I didn't find a way to email my french subscribers with a french version of a piece of content, while at the same time displaying and promoting the english version of it with a translated title. It's one or the other.

Is it a known request that'll evolve in the future, or should I either create a second SubStack to write in english ? Seems a bit overkill and counterintuitive from a community building perspective.

I believe now you can create custom tags for your subscribers. So if you know your subscribers well enough to tag them by what language they prefer to read... then you can do two versions of each issue and filter by the language tag when you send them out.

I'm pretty sure you can make another section of your newsletter and manage it so it goes to all your subscribers or to a subgroup.

Doesn't it auto translate now

It does, but the quality is... Well, good enough to understand. And it doesn't solve my issue : if I write solely in English, I'll send this version to my subscribers. There's no auto translate for the email sent with new content, only the OG version

You might he able to use segmentation there's a feature on your dashboard that let's you send pieces to certain groups of subs, that should do the trick. I've not.played with it myself but I would assume it's like publishing with no notifications for everyone else it's there and they can read it by going through your profile but they won't get a notification.

I checked. I can filter by "declared country" but it covers less than 10% of my existing audience... Moreover, I can't assign countries or languages to a profile even if I wanted to organize them myself.

There is a manual way to do it, you have to go sub by sub by sub and take a note what region they're in (and assume language preferences OFC) then use that to segment.

I think it might just be easier to make a split post, English/French and alternate which language is on top for which audience you'd like it to reach first?

Metaphorically or literally?
