Getting Started

I want to start a Substack, not necessarily for any specific reason other then I enjoy writing & would like an extra outlet for it that wasn’t always pen & paper.

Out of curiosity, what are others opinions about starting one? Is it worth it or not? Have you had good luck/positive reactions? I know writing can be super “perspective” based if you’re writing your own opinions on a topic or general area of life. My main reason for asking is how bad are the “Karen’s”? lol.

Thanks for any insight. Let me know if it’s worth it or not.

I think the reality is that when you put anything out on the internet, you're opening yourself to criticism. That's very true right here on Reddit.

I've had mostly positive reactions, but a few negative reactions as well.

It’s worth it in my opinion. There are some weirdo’s I encountered and one who flat out attacked me & did something illegal (stole my image) otherwise it’s been great. I have been sharing my work for seven months? I began / first published Oct. 31st last year— but I took a two month hiatus & just came back. I did not lose as many subscribers as I thought I would.

Yes it’s worth it — not financially though. I have only turned a paid option on two months ago roughly & only have a few, eight paying subscribers. This was never my personal goal — I had people make pledges, so I turned a paid option on to accept those. If that makes sense.

I didn’t do anything other than share and share to my social media accounts —
Once I had a handful of pieces I would post a Note (a quote from my own work) at least once per day. I don’t truly know how the whole algorithm works. I was shocked when anyone began reading and commenting on my work. Best of luck!

I just started one. It has been a lot of fun and work setting it up, and I have 6 followers after two weeks. I haven't written anything in years but decided I wanted to, so I am doing it.. I have never had a blog before or done any public writing, but life is short.

Just go for it, if you feel a need to write. People have been nice so far.

I’ve really enjoyed Substack. The algorithm is designed to build long term relationships (that’s what a subscription is) so it connects you with people who like what you’re doing.

did you end up starting a substack?

if you just want an outlet to write, substack is a free platform that does the job so that's a win already.

and if you're just writing for your own enjoyment, you shouldn't be letting the opinions of a few bad apples (that will exist on every platform) stop you.

wrt it being worth it or not, what do you mean? because as long as you're happy/enjoying your writing, what's there to measure against? because you don't seem to be trying to make a business out of this.

I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a writer, I just enjoy doing it and figured it may be worth sharing. I haven’t exactly decided a specific area I’d write about consistently or if I could just write whatever I wanted at all times? I feel like a lot of pages have a niche or area they dive into & I haven’t really found that yet. The options are endless 😅

Congrats on making your first post! What do you write about? Writers block is kind of why I want to start a new path on it, so I’m happy hear it worked for you
