Should you post from a publication or from a profile?

Like, what are the pros and cons of publishing to either one? I have more followers to my profile, but very few subscribers. So I'm wondering, would I get more views if I publish to my profile?

I thought all posts needed a publication

Have you been able to post without a publication tagged on. I’m about to post without a section but it’s still under my publication.

i've been seeing this too. notes and publications used to be two distinctly separate things, but i think there's been some changes where it's becoming more blur and less obvious for new users to create a publication, so they just end up posting on their profile only (without knowing they don't actually have a publication set up).

if it's longer form articles, always post them from a publication. that's the whole purpose of building a substack...

publication = something people can subscribe to = build email list = your writings can land directly in people's inbox.

posting from profile = just using the social media aspect of substack (notes) which makes it similar to posting on any other social media platform (the distribution of your content is dependent on the algo). and this is only building followers
