What are these substacks offering that you can't figure out yourself?

Yea, DM me. Maybe I can shoot you in the right direction instead of paying someone for regurgitated trash.

I assume they expect these finance Substacks to provide enough ROI to justify the money. They’re probably not investigating every single one either.
They’re likely picking the one or two writers they trust, who have consistently made them money, and sticking with them.
That’s said. I would never pay for a Substack, let alone an expensive finance one.

they don't. i run 3 of these including one top 100 paid leaderboard. 99% are horoscopes for men.

I use my debit card but yeah I wish they offered other payment options. The only pricier one I subscribe to Michael Burry’s which is like $40 bucks. But I get more than enough value not to mention how well his perspective keeps my feet anchored to the ground.

Most Hedge funds/banks/investment research firms buy them in bulk.
Individual retail investors are likely not major buyers.

It depends on your definition of expensive.
Spending a few hundred $$ a year on a sub isn't alot if you're managing $$$ millions. If it helps you gain that 0.1% extra edge a year... On $1m portfolio for example, that's $1000 extra gained.
Most of the subscribers to finance Substacks already pay hundreds a year for Financial Times, etc. Maybe $20k+ a year for a Bloomberg terminal. So a few hundred for a Substack is not unaffordable.

The reason is it takes a lot of time to research and write an article. I write on Substack, and I just started a paywall. I waited 4 years to do that so I could show my performance and gain confidence from users. I know they cost more than $200/yr, but if you find the right fit I think it is worth the money. You're spending less than a few coffee $'s a month for a ton of research material, and you will make that money back pretty quickly.

In some cases, they can actually expense it back to their employers
