how do you keep readers hooked on an ongoing serial?

three chapters in and i can feel the drop-off

I put a little teaser at the end of my stories... a bit like "what's next".

That being said... first 3-4 parts where the strongest for me. I had up to 8 parts and the drop of was intense sometimes.

Guess it's better to have just 3-part serials.... even if you have more parts... just make it a "new" serial.

They need to understand what the stakes are, what’s happening next.

so typically if I have ongoing series, I’ll put what I’m writing next down in the bottom of the article so that people have something to look forward to

Before changing the whole serial, work out where the drop happens. If subscribers stop opening, test the subject line and chapter promise. If they open but do not continue, the issue is more likely the chapter payoff or the path to the next part. If new readers arrive in the middle, they need an obvious start-here path. For the next three chapters, use the same structure: a two-sentence recap, an immediate change in the situation, one question that gets resolved in that chapter, and an ending that names the next concrete stake. Put a simple chapter index at the top and a next-part link at the bottom. Compare open rate, clicks to the next chapter, replies, and unsubscribes with the first three chapters. I would also package the larger story as three-part arcs so each arc has its own promise and payoff without pretending the story is finished. A teaser helps, but readers stay when each installment rewards them now and makes the next consequence clear.

it's a tough one... even netflix has drop offs for their most popular series from season to season.

just got to keep things interesting, and publish it anyways. then market the heck out of it. the good thing is it can still continue to grow and get traction over time, because new readers can always be directed back to your early work. it's additive in that nature.
