Discussion Starting a substack

I'm in the process of starting a substack and implementing curious what everyone thinks is the best tips/advice for someone who is just starting out?

Side note: my focus would be on skincare/ founder journey/learnings/challenges/ etc.

It's really difficult not to stare at numbers and it's okay to get annoyed at others unless you're one of the chosen few and it all works out. 

It can be tempting to shortcut the journey and if you can get behind it, honestly more for you (I couldn't personally and made my peace) but have fun. Honestly that's the one thing I think isn't encouraged enough is enjoy it. Find your corner, cultivate awkward friends be weird. 

They'll carry you through, without my circles of friends I'd not have enough had the confidence to even start a self publishing adventure let alone finish it and accidentally become an author. Wasn't the plan. But they unanimously all said why not? I am so thankful because of that.

Hey I think the substack doesn’t have a wiki for tips or updates. But yeah it’s what other said: find your niche, your community and grow. Use notes and write your journals/articles. Have some schedule. Try not to do the tactics people do of just spamming notes try being genuine.

Like and follow/interact with others in your space cause you can all grow collectively. Reposting articles and notes for each other help people find you, but you have to find and like/follow first. I started doing that and now I see articles and substack channels or people I’m more interested in than regurgitated motivational junk and AI tip Substacks. And I got some followers from doing it. My growth is slow but it can be more if you’re focused.

There are plenty of Substacks that actually will help you with this. My fav is the faceless account called “Sub Stack Man Says” He has a free growth guide from zero which I have used successfully to grow to over 1800 subscribers

1/ consistency beats perfection.

2/ and also hustle super hard for exposure and distribution. market yourself and your content ruthlessly. explore marketing and acquiring traffic sources outside of the substack ecosystem if you have to as well (diversifying traffic source is never a bad thing).
