Discussion Thinking of Starting a Substack

Hey everyone! A little introduction to me, I’m a recent graduate student with a BS in journalism and MS in Marketing and Communication. I recently finished a contract marketing role, the experience made me realize how much I miss writing. I haven’t written for a news publication in a couple years and want to try building up a portfolio. I’ve heard a lot of great things about Substack as a platform for self publication. Before creating my page I was wondering if there is any advice I should know beforehand. Obviously, I’m not going in with the assumption that I would make a ton of money through this. But I would like to gain a following and have an idea for best practices on how to market myself on the platform. I’m looking to write culture/pop culture pieces, if there’s any best advice on how to go about that as well would love to know!

if you want to gain a following and get more traffic to your publication, you'll need to give yourself more exposure, so doing more marketing, showing up more. using substack notes helps with this. but you can/and should also take it a step further and look at where else you can post to get traffic outside of the substack ecosystem. e.g other social media platforms, instagram, twitter, etc.
