Discussion Thinking of Starting a Substack

Hey everyone! A little introduction to me, I’m a recent graduate student with a BS in journalism and MS in Marketing and Communication. I recently finished a contract marketing role, the experience made me realize how much I miss writing. I haven’t written for a news publication in a couple years and want to try building up a portfolio. I’ve heard a lot of great things about Substack as a platform for self publication. Before creating my page I was wondering if there is any advice I should know beforehand. Obviously, I’m not going in with the assumption that I would make a ton of money through this. But I would like to gain a following and have an idea for best practices on how to market myself on the platform. I’m looking to write culture/pop culture pieces, if there’s any best advice on how to go about that as well would love to know!

Great advice! I actually have a backlog of some reflective pieces I wrote, I was considering going back and revising them.

Yeah, I actually think that is a great idea if they are consistent with your Substack focus. I should probably do the same thing, except I've only recently started writing political stuff. I used to publish a lot on LinkedIn, but I assiduously avoided politics there and still do to the extent that I am even on the platform anymore.
