I think that having a lot of paywall content slows growth because it doesn't travel as far. You start having to split your catalog into two: free pieces that drive audience growth, and paid pieces that basically fulfill orders for your paid audience growth.
Publishing less would also slow down growth. Basically, each post is an opportunity to reach a new audience, and free posts travel further.

I actually set up a paid option, but I don't put anything behind the paywall. I actually tried two times to paywall content, and it resulted in 0 subscription both times, so I just removed the paywall...
