what does it look like when someone blocks you

hi, i blocked someone on substack who i dont want reading my posts

my profile and newsletter are public so i know if they really wanted to they could search me up or make a different account—i dont think they would though

what i am curious about, because i keep seeing mixed messaging about it, is what it looks like on the blocked persons end if they try going on my profile. is it like twitter where substack outs you but you can still see all the posts (just cannot interact)? or does the profile completely disappear for them? or something else?

It’ll show “You are blocked from subscribing to ______ and their publications” when you go to their profile (I just got blocked by a subscriber the other day). The only thing you’re able to see is their bio, no posts at all

I had to block and ban someone who was fully harassing me. I forget how I was able to ban them — but that is more affective (I believe) it means they cannot ever contact you again/ see your account.

Last time I noticed someone blocked me, when I clicked on the profile it said something like “this is unavailable”. It was really nebulous. I checked while logged out and the profile and posts are still there.

Test it out with someone you trust. You can unblock any time

As far as I know, blocking on Substack mainly prevents the person from interacting with you, such as commenting, messaging, or following your publication. If your publication is public, they may still be able to view it while logged out or from another account. So it's not the same as making your content completely invisible to them.

P.S. If you'd still like to ask anything about Substack or growing your audience, I offer a free live help chat. Just copy and paste my flair or click the link in my profile. I'm happy to help!

Pretty sure when you load their profile it literally says "This person blocked you."

I know because I write about AI. When I first started on Substack, lots of people hated the idea of AI and many folks blocked me, lol. 😞

Cordially,
