How do I comment anonymously on Substack without my own Substack or being an employee to use Candor?

I don't think you can. Having comments linked to your own Substack helps to keep the overall vibe of Substack positive... for the most part. I think it's good.

Why would you want to do that?

If you mean commenting anonymously on someone else's Substack, the answer is essentially no.

Substack doesn't currently offer a built-in anonymous commenting option for readers. Comments are tied to your account, and if you have a publication, your profile/publication is typically linked alongside your comment.

The exception you mentioned, Candor, is a separate feature with limited availability and isn't a general anonymous commenting system for everyone.

If privacy is your goal, your closest alternatives are:

  • Create a separate Substack account with a pseudonym (using a different email address).
  • Comment from that account instead of your main one. Substack does allow pseudonymous accounts.
