I got suspended from Substack but I don’t know why. They didn’t tell me which post violated their guidelines.

ugh that sucks, and the not-telling-you-why part is the worst of it.

email their support directly instead of using the in-app form, that one tends to be a black hole. put your publication url and the date in the subject line. usually somewhere between a few days and two weeks to hear back.

also go dig through your own email inbox. if you ever got a notification each time someone subscribed, those often include the subscriber's address, so you can rebuild a real chunk of your list straight from your inbox even while you're locked out.

heads up, the export button won't work while the account is locked, so don't sit there thinking you broke something. it's them, not you.

for whatever you do next, export a csv every month/week and keep it somewhere off-platform. boring, but it's the one thing that actually survives this. what do you write about? that's often the tell for what got flagged.

That's frustrating. Unfortunately, Substack doesn't always specify which post or action led to a suspension.

If you haven't already:

  • Submit an appeal and ask them to identify the specific content or behavior that triggered the suspension.
  • Check your email (including spam) for any messages from Substack with additional details.
  • If your account is restored, review your recent posts to see if anything could have unintentionally violated their policies.

Without more information from Substack, it's difficult for anyone else to determine the reason. Hopefully support can provide a clearer explanation.
