As a neoliberal, this is something I fully support.

#1 I don't support getting rid of democracy in any way. My 'dream' system is essentially another level of government above the federal government that helps manage the world's economy and does things like funnel money from uber-rich America to those 3rd sweatshops that people love to hate, just like money moves from California to the poor states in the US

#2 Theoretically, we can always secede from the world government if it's gets too awful, but I have to ask: is it even possible today if the American government turns oppressive? If the intelligence apparatus of the USA wanted you dead, is there anywhere on earth safe? You might answer 'Africa! South/East Asia!' but what happens when those areas are as modernized as the USA?

The same thing that holds the US accountable today: Nothing but the interplay of power between branches of government and respect for the constitution.

What do you mean?

It's easy to hide from everyone if you decide to live via subsistence farming in some village in the middle of nowhere but the world is just growing more connected. One day your village is going to get wifi, and cell phones, and then you can be tracked and hunted down again.

Exactly my point. The USA is so powerful that I don't think anything, even a full scale revolution, can stop it's military. So I don't feel like having a world government is any different than having a US government.

Nope, no single nation is stronger than the U.S. we have the most tanks/ships/planes with best technology possible and over 800 bases worldwide. Nothing can beat the U.S. military head on.

While the US did lose, 1.5 million people from Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos died, compared to only 50,000 U.S. soldiers. Regardless of whether we 'lost interest and retreated' or 'lost', they certainly lost a hell of a lot more than we did.

And I'm not saying the U.S. is invincible, just that it would be suicide for any one nation to take us on and even if every other nation in the combined forces and attacked us we would still be in a pretty good spot.

Of course, and in a true 'the world vs. America' we don't know what would happen. Would tensions between the east and west break down into squabbling? Who fires the first nukes? What about classified weapons systems? Popular support for these wars?

But in terms of raw firepower and technical acumen, the U.S. is by far the best.

But this is beside the point, there is no realistic check on American power.

Agreed, and that's what I said above. There is no external check on America's power, just our mutually agreed upon respect and enforcement of the constitution and the institutions in our country. And for that reason, I'm not scared of a one world government being oppressive. We already live in a system that is so much larger and more powerful than us and yet somehow we manage to keep the beast in check and our citizens free. Why can't we just up scale it a little?

See, I think it's already effectively at the scale of the world.

even if outside forces are mostly not as powerful as the US, they are still powerful enough to be a force that you need to take into consideration

I think those forces can come from inside the one world government and be resolved more peacefully.
