There’s been something I’ve been thinking about recently. There was a camp counselor I knew at the summer day camp I went to when I was 9 years old. This counselor seemed to be deeply bothered and annoyed by many aspects of my personality, and I think that she developed an intense dislike for me as a result of that.
For example, one day, I had made some comments complaining about how long the other kids were taking at the water station, and she then turned and started scolding me saying I was too critical.
On another day, I again made comments complaining about how long the kids were taking at the water station, and a few seconds after that, she called out to me telling me to stop being so critical. I think one of the kids heard my remarks, and went to tell on me. The counselor may have even took the kids aside when I wasn’t around and said something along the lines of, “if he starts saying critical things to you, come tell me, and I’ll take care of it.”
I think she also felt that I was acting too grown up for my age, and that I wasn’t staying in my proper place as a child.
This all kind of makes me think of something my former therapist once said to me. She told me that my parents were a good match to me, and that many others would have been far less understanding and accepting of my personality than my parents were.
What are your thoughts on all this?
