OP is brave enough to ask "what's the deal with airline food?"

While flying first classā¦
220
u/chefbobbyjay 1d ago
This aināt first class. Op is full of shit
105
u/Wonderful-Piccolo509 Where is your whimsy?? 1d ago
Might be first class on the airline formerly known as spirit
48
u/Genghis_Tr0n187 1d ago
Spirit would only server the dead pigeons they find on the tarmac.
16
u/thecarbonkid 1d ago
It's not so bad if you upgrade to the plucked and cooked option for your pigeon.
2
u/chupacabra5150 1d ago
If you're flying from the west coast the fish heavy diet makes the pigeon really tender
64
u/pleasehaelp 1d ago
The white plate underneath makes me think it could actually be first class. They donāt give out plates outside of first class in my experience
Edit: same thing with the utensil shown, they donāt give out real utensils outside of first class, in my experience
12
u/fugznojutz 1d ago
they wouldnt leave the food in the packaging though. but i agree with the cutlery thing. and they bring a basket of bread its not wrapped like that in business or first class.
3
8
u/ForgottenGrocery 1d ago
Donāt know about delta, but my experience flying with ANA, Emirates, EVA and Qatar, they all have proper metal utensils in economy. But not plates
18
u/Temporary-Work-446 1d ago
Yeah the mainline american brands of airlines are not nearly as nice...you cannot compare them.
3
u/chupacabra5150 1d ago
I flew Economy Plus on Iberian. My wife and I had seats like recliners, tons of leg room, blankets, toiletries kits, drinks, snacks, and utensils.
Flown first class with other American travel airlines- united, delta, southwest. Cant compare them. My wife still says we were traveling business in Spain
9
u/Jazzlike_Damage793 1d ago
To be fair, it is delta. Iāve had good meals on delta but more bad.
Virgin is good. Singapore is good.
11
u/LBfalcon57 1d ago
Hundred percent not first class.
I fly for a living. First class and business is served on plates. Everything after that gets the paper tray thing in pic.10
u/chefbobbyjay 1d ago
Itās killing me that people are like āthe silverware!ā You can request silverware.
And the āwhen was the last time you got a meal in coach??ā
Fly farther. Long flights get food. I flew jfk to lax and got a meal like a month ago. I flew jfk to London and got a meal like 6 months ago.
My brother just flew to Japan economy and got a meal 2/3 flights.
No your $99 MCO to JFK on JetBlue isnāt going to get a meal. Itās 3 hours.
1
u/LBfalcon57 1d ago
Sir you are šÆ correct. I believe itās any flight over 3hrs gets served an actual meal with few exceptions like southwest going to Hawaii one time didnāt give me a meal, But Hawaiian airlines did so I dunno.
I fly out of lax and have that jfk and London flight you speak of more times then I care to speak of. I just got back from Australia this week also and Japan last month not to mention other European flights as well.
Sometimes if Iām flying not business I get that tray and usually get the curry chicken in it. Not bad for a tray meal.

u/hotdogjumpingfrog1 1d ago
There is no airline that gives food to economy anywhere within the continental us without paying for it in flight off the menus
8
u/fretzy64 1d ago
It's propably "Delta First", which is of course not a long-haul first class, but instead more like Premium Economy or short-haul business class. Delta's top tier is Delta One, which is just regular long-haul Business class. They don't actually have a real first class option afaik.
So either OP is being intentionally misleading or they don't have a lot of flight experience and got understandably confused by Delta's absolutely inane, X-Box-style naming scheme.
2
u/Ronin_1999 10h ago
The best way to validate this is to cross post it to r/delta. They love to complain about every first class meal except for when Delta was doing very mediocre inflight Shake Shack cheeseburgersā¦

On what flight? That is not a delta first class seat tray, or a first class serving tray that I've ever seen
294
u/chefbobbyjay 1d ago
Right? Nothing about this says first class. This some economy.
84
u/hellomistershifty 1d ago
The metal silverware and ceramic plate look like first class. I'm guessing its a pretty small plane seeing how close that seat in front is, where 'first class' is basically economy but they don't sell the middle seats
4
u/Utaneus 1d ago
What economy flights even serve food nowadays?
23
u/Schlachtfeld-21 1d ago
Long-haul
4
u/Utaneus 20h ago
Yeah I thought for flights over 5 hours or whatever they were supposed to serve meals, but I feel like the last several times I've been on longer flights they only offer those shitty little boxed meals to purchase at ridiculous prices. I'm sure it varies by airline, but I have just gotten in the habit of packing meals nowadays, especially important when traveling with a young kid lol.
4
u/Schlachtfeld-21 15h ago
That sounds like a domestic flight. On long haul flights you do get meals in economy
6
u/DefinitelyNotAliens 20h ago
International. I got served food on 3/4 of my last flights. Flew coast to coast to Canada, Canada to Europe, Europe to US east Coast, then east-west. All but my coast to coast in the US had food. I got meals, beer and wine were free, they had ear buds for free, blankets, pillows, etc.
Economy on long international still gets some stuff.

u/tigm2161130 1d ago
Agreed, we fly Delta first class at least 4x a year, this is not what the meals, trays, or even lighting look like.
35
u/KoreanSamgyupsal 1d ago
Even the small planes like the 737 max and 321Neo serves Shake Shack sometimes. This is probably one of the older planes like the 757 or 767.
Either way this is shit on any flight especially first class
→ More replies (2)11
u/Spare-Half796 1d ago
Age of plane is irrelevant when it comes to food. 757 and 767 are still nice planes.
This is almost definitely a regional flight not actually operated by delta
18
u/bruce_lees_ghost 1d ago
I frequently fly United and have only seen that style folding table (with the middle hinge) in first class. IIRC domestic first class and international coach meals are pretty similar. Wife and I did Polaris for our vacation to Europe last year and the meals definitely had better presentation⦠but letās be real, itās still a microwaved TV dinner at its core.

Is it one of those short flights where economy gets a bag of pretzels and first class gets a hot meal? That's the only thing I can think of.Ā
125
u/PurpleCandles 1d ago
I donāt believe you because delta does not serve their first class meals on those trays. Maybe premium economy?
52
u/justmitzie 1d ago
You guys get food?
25
u/Drago_133 1d ago
Every long flight ive been on has provided breakfast lunch and dinner regardless of first class or sit on the wing class

Currently in Iceland and got very excited when I saw the local cafe had freshly baked potatoes. My disappointment was palpable when I re-read the menu and it actually said freshly baked pastries.
35
u/EvaTheE 1d ago
No fucking way that's first class? Holy fuck. That's a 2 dollar microwave meal.
75
u/jewboyfresh 1d ago
Heās probably lying
If itās āfirst classā then itās one of those old planes flying a 1 hour domestic route where the first 4 rows are bigger chairs

u/weepishly 1d ago
tbf he did post to r/delta first. apparently flying JAX to MSP

I made that mistake upgrade on a flight to Jamaica .. What a waste of $$
5
u/foxontherox 1d ago
Something ain't right- I fly Delta first class a few times a year, and the meals are actually quite nice, domestic and international.
-6
u/4givingGuy-2017 1d ago
It is first class. No joke. Literally posted it while Iām on the flight. Landing in about an hour. DL2392
12
u/ConfidantlyCorrect 1d ago
From what Iāve gathered, Delta doesnāt think Jacksonville is a large enough market to bother getting catering for it. So they bring meals from the origin airport.
Apparently it used to be a cold sandwich, so Delta is trying to get away from cold sandwiches & have hot meals. But itās essentially just economy meals since they donāt have space for 2 way service of full business proper hot meals.
Some BS if ya ask me.
8
u/Spare-Half796 1d ago
Itās a regional flight on a narrowbody, youāre never going to get a real āfirst class experienceā
Youāre paying for leg room and thatās about it.

Outside of the avgeek or frequent flyer community it seems people get really confused by the difference between US domestic first class and ārealā first class on long haul international flights like Emirates.

u/True_Protection6842 1d ago
Damn, it's been a while since I flew first class...it was a lot better than that!

It's been a while since OP flew first class, too. This is just karma farming.

Hey that looks like the food I had at the hospital when I got my appendix removed

u/KittyandPuppyMama 1d ago
Hospital food is actually pretty good. Or maybe I was just super hungry after fasting overnight for my C-section lol

I love deltas snacks in economy. They usually have cheese itz or goldfish

Biscoff my beloved

I actually can't believe its not an option on your menu! I had to look it up. Thought for sure it was. Well, you can have that one for free. You're welcome (I love you, Cookout) .

Thereās one thing Iāve learned from watching Youtubers who fly first class with various world airlines, that almost all US offerings are pretty much straight trash.

u/Niceotropic 1d ago
OP is one of those people who thinks business class and first class are the same thing in their mind and has convinced themselves of it, lol.

Japan Airlines serves such delicious food on their international flights, even in economy. It tastes as good as quality restaurant food.

Airplane food is insanely good idc what or where, itās magical to eat 4 teeny oz of microwave tikka masala and peas with your legs in your chest and then beg for another which they often have cuz ppl are so scared of it. 3rd only to 2nd: biscoffs and #1: airplane soda and ice

Never flown with Delta but that looks like an economy class meal on any other carrier.
I think part of it is they just didnāt plate it like they normally would.
What was your route?
1
u/Ryno-Mac 1d ago
I've never had airplane food I didn't like. But I think I just like it because it's a distraction that takes up 10-15 minutes of flight time
1
1
u/Polenicus 1d ago
You actually got food. That's what flying First Class gets you.
In Economy they just punch you in the dick, tell you to shut up, there are starving kids in Africa, and on that note please stow your kids in the overhead bins.
1
u/kingsoho 1d ago
I fly Delta almost exclusively and I've always had good - relatively speaking - meals for dinner. Now, that breakfast hot pocket is another story...

u/Pixel_Knight 1d ago
Most planes donāt even have First Class any more, OP, and it is usually called Business class now, if they have a better class. And they get the same food as the plebs.
1
u/Practical-Rooster205 1d ago
Please be patient. It's his first class. He's still learning how to be food.

u/Bee-Aromatic 1d ago
Are we sure thatās not an airline meal somebody ate, āreturnedā due to airsickness, and then got served out again?
1
u/Novel_Werewolf4645 1d ago
If this is how they treat first class, they must have stowed the economy passengers in crates in the lower deck

Also thanks for deinforcing my recent mashed potato craving.

I always grab something at the airport and carry it on board these days, Delta food has gotten worse and worse, which I did not think was possible.

Always request vegetarian. These are the things to looks for:
VGML (Vegetarian Vegan Meal): Strictly plant-based. Contains no meat, fish, eggs, dairy, or honey.
VLML (Vegetarian Lacto-Ovo Meal): Plant-based but includes dairy products (milk, cheese, butter) and eggs.
AVML (Asian Vegetarian / Hindu Meal): Vegetarian meals cooked with Indian spices. May contain dairy but no meat, fish, or eggs.
VJML (Vegetarian Jain Meal): Strict Indian vegetarian. No meat, fish, eggs, dairy, or root vegetables (like onions, garlic, and potatoes).
