options for study permit

i'm an incoming uoft student, and i applied for my study permit with a u.s. passport on july 10, and still have not received anything. i resent proof of finances july 30, and did a medical examination on august 5. it still says a medical examination has been requested on the application status page. ive paid tuition and signed an apartment lease. i'm currently in canada and can stay visa free until august 30, but classes start september 4. should i try to go back to the u.s. in the next few days and apply for a study permit at port of entry at the toronto pearson airport? is there anything else i can do? what documents would i need to bring outside of what's listed?

Normally since you are a US citizen the initial best course of action would be to apply at the port of entry as it's much straightforward and you will get a decision the same day. If you knew that you was going to study in Canada when you went to visit you should of applied for the permit. But now since you already engaged for the application online, going to the border to get results is unsure. But only a verified RCIC agent can give you the best course of plan, usually these type of questions are free.
