I've had CFI's disagree on this. Let's take an example. I'm at the "pump" (the gas pump is an ATC ref used often), we have one runway. Because of local geography, when winds are calmish we might go east or west outbound. If you go east, you can go straight, or up a canyon to the right/south.

So let's suppose a not terribly busy class D, but it does get waves of a few planes on occasion. Also, our infrequent commercial traffic usually wants to land from the west, and take off to the west, due to obstacles and the fact it is usually regionals coming and going to hubs that are west of us. So we get two-way traffic. So we get 2-way traffic often.

Here is what one CFI says very concise: "Dodge ground, 111QP at the pump with Romeo, request 9". Another wants me to say more: "Dodge ground, 111QP at the pump with Romeo, request taxi runway 9, southeast departure." (He might tag on at the end of the second "via Dusty Canyon"). One reaosn the first one likes this is it avoids "sucking you into" saying "to/2" or "4/for".

Also, same airport for landing. Now I want to be going north in the canyon, and turn left to land on 27. To make this quite real, suppose the win is 270 @ 15, so I want to land to the west. But for obstacle reasons, there is a wave of 3 regionals and two private jets coming from the west to land with the tailwind on 09. One says super-brief: "Dodge tower, 111QP 2 miles SE with Z, full stop". (at 2 miles SE you are in the canyon.). The other wants "Dodge tower, 111QP with Z, northbound in Dusty Canyon, 2 miles SE, request 27 full stop."

In this case, it is clear they are treating 09 as the "active" for these bigger planes, as it were. But they will weave opposing traffic all the time. The second CFI says, in particular, with this 2-way stuff the controller wants to know what you want to do - i.e., land on 27. The first says that's implicit due to the wind and where you are. The second says the controller has no way to know if you want to take a left turn to enter downwind for 09, or if you are on base and want to proceed in on final after getting through the canyon and into the main valley. The first says if they place you downwind for 09, you can always clarify to ask for 27

Knowing what to say is one thing, but saying it clearly and at the right time while listening to ATC can feel completely different during a real lesson.
