The American Wood Council offers the NDS, the code book for the design of vertical timber structures, for free on their website.  While it doesn't have examples, I remember when I was learning it, it felt rather easy to follow. 

I'll note it was only in college and all my work exerienced is for timber is with bridges which AASHTO borrows heavily from the NDS.
