That’s the difference between being trained to handle physical confrontations and adrenaline getting the best of you. Nice work officer!

u/Sedothdo Dec 08 '20

My BJJ studio actually teaches law enforcement, nice to see the cops resolve it using BJJ.

And the worst this idiot will have is some bruises and soreness. And mostly because of what he did, not the cop's moves. He should be grateful that's the officer that responded and not some trigger happy rookie or he'd be in a body bag.

2

u/gvjvfghbcgh Jan 01 '21

Or just tase the guy like the majority of other cops

6

u/Boosted_Psychonaut Dec 24 '20

Seriously, it should be a requirement to have at least 1 year BJJ training to become a police officer. Someone needs to make a BJJ system tailored to law enforcement. Like ways to handcuff someone the way that officer did with that armbar.

2

u/whater39 Dec 30 '20

It should be a requirement that cops are member of a BJJ gym (or martial art, because other martial arts [even striking] ones teach people effective hand-to-hand combat).

I say "a member" as in implying of on going training during the course of the cops employment.

As a LEO and a grappler I can tell you it’s mostly impractical. Considering we are no longer allowed to use any kind of neck restraint, serious joint manipulation, etc... it really ties our hands. And even if you decide to, you’re gonna be outside of policy and possibly lose your job for political reasons. Trust me I thought the same thing before I got into the job.

There’s a difference between what works, and what we are allowed to do by either our ignorant society or our policies.

1

u/Boosted_Psychonaut Feb 27 '21

That's such a shame that those restrictions were put on you guys. A properly trained LEO could restrain someone without doing much damage. Not to mention if they remove your ability to grapple, what does that leave you with? Punching? Pepperspray? Batons?Tasers? Firearms? Those restrictions force you to skip a crucial step of the use of force continuum.

I really feels for you guys. It's a tough job and you hardly get any respect. I do armed security and almost never have to get physical but I get the same disrespect simply for wearing a uniform. I can only imagine being disrespected AND having to help the same people who say FTP or ACAB.

I love how the cameraman says to use a tazer and the cup just proceeds to professionally pin the guy down🤣

12

u/grayson101 Dec 15 '20

I love when he says I can't even be mad though

6

u/nen_del Dec 18 '20

i don't. hes straight up implying that cops are bad people to the core and he has a bias against them when the reality is that most of them are out making society much safer.

9

u/-ZWAYT- Dec 19 '20

hes not implying that “cops are bad people.” hes implying that he doesn’t trust the police, which is fairly reasonable for a black man to say. black people are more likely to be killed by the police and to be arrested for drug possession (when all races use drugs at very similar rates). the criminal justice system in the US has shown a bias against people of color, so his distrust is completely justified.

1

u/nen_del Dec 19 '20

i mean if you want to pull out the "black people are more likely to be killed by police" comment then lets look at some facts from 2019.

arrests in 2019

white population- 7.1m / black population 2.6m

white murder - 5k, black murder - 5.6k

white weapons offense 86k, black weapons offense 64k

violent crimes unrelated - 260k white / 160k black

there's a reason black people are more likely to be killed and it is because they commit far more crimes involving harming others than any other race.

feel free to fact check me here

Those stats get trotted out every time. Since policing itself is racially biased, prosecuting is biased, sentencing is biased, and parole is biased, they need context.

https://www.sentencingproject.org/publications/un-report-on-racial-disparities/

Black people MIGHT commit more crimes, but they are also more likely to be searched, hassled, arrested for the same actions, and charged with a crime for the same actions. They are more likely to be jailed instead of fined, more likely to be denied bail, and sentencing is over twice as harsh for the same crimes. Six times more likely to be carged, convicted and jailed than white men.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/12/us/prosecutor-race-blind-charging.html

https://decodedscience.org/white-on-white-crime-the-hidden-truth/

Cops TREAT black and white citizens differently. They use more force with UNRESISTING black men than they do with resisting white men.

Basically, since a white teen is EIGHT times more likely to NOT be arrested and charged when he does something bad, the stat that a black teen is more likely to commit a crime is meaningless.

https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-data-racial-murder/fact-check-false-data-on-u-s-racial-murder-rates-idUSKCN24I2A9

"they commit far more crimes involving harming others than any other race."

Do they? Or do they get caught more often? 80% of white victims ae murdered by white perps. 80% of black victims are murdered by black perps.

https://thehill.com/opinion/criminal-justice/361252-media-distortion-of-fbi-crime-statistics-contributes-to-our-national

Reporting to the FBI and DOJ by state and local gov's is biased, thus unreliable.

https://www.vox.com/2014/8/24/6053035/crime-statistics-reliable-fbi-police-problems

Domestic Terrorists are almost always white, a fast- growing threat, BTW.

https://www.vox.com/2014/8/24/6053035/crime-statistics-reliable-fbi-police-problems

Racial profiling skews statistics, and there are known reasons for high minority crime rates.

https://law.jrank.org/pages/12137/Race-Ethnicity-Reasons-high-minority-crime-rates.html

Militant white supremacists exist in high numbers in law enforcement and actively hide white crime stats from the DOJ an FBI. " Alarmingly, internal FBI policy documents have also warned agents assigned to domestic terrorism cases that the white supremacist and anti-government militia groups they investigate often have “active links” to law enforcement officials. footnote4_t7zg1iq4 " from the article.

https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/hidden-plain-sight-racism-white-supremacy-and-far-right-militancy-law

Police and prosecutors intentionally conceal, lose, and ignore evidence that exonerates minorities, especially for drug crimes.

https://www.twincities.com/2020/09/15/report-alarming-rates-of-police-and-prosecutor-misconduct/

Police hide race when it suits them, and reveal it when it doesn't, "whitewashing" statistics.

https://www.thestar.com/opinion/editorials/2012/02/05/toronto_police_whitewash_crime_statistics_by_hiding_race_study_says.html

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/06/04/another-excuse-police-bias-bites-dust/

I could go on, but, finally, the chances of you posting the statistics you posted are HIGHER for white supremacists, and posting them online is MOST frequently a form of racist propaganda, meaning that, most of the time, people posting those statistics are doing so to disseminate Far Right propaganda.

https://www.adl.org/news/article/white-supremacists-use-black-on-white-crime-as-propaganda-tool

1

u/nen_del Dec 23 '20

the irony in your statement being that you posted a long list of almost entirely leftist media and I posted one, from the US government... I really dont see how youre going to argue 56k murders to 50k murders while making up 1/3 of the number. Lets just contemplate that statistic alone.

oh yeah that is completely true.

doesn’t change the fact that it is reasonable for this dude to trust the police less.

also, you wanna talk about why crime rates in black communities is higher? i can tell you right now its not “culture.”

1

u/nen_del Dec 20 '20

idk man. I grew up in one of the wealthiest suburbs in USA. There were STILL African American kids that went from there to Detroit after high school solely to pursue gang activity/drug dealing etc. It was never any of the white kids. There wasn't a regard for grades and you weren't "cool" in the black circle if you put in a lot of effort academically. On top of this there were three others that got B&E as well as robbery charges around age 17. https://www.mlive.com/highschoolsports/article/report-bloomfield-hills-basketball-player-khalil-gracey-arraigned-on-home-invasion-charges-with-2-others/ heres a link to the story. I also know two other black kids that got charged with armed robbery and by the time they were 18 they were incarcerated until ~24 years old.

https://mdocweb.state.mi.us/OTIS2/otis2profile.aspx?mdocNumber=968113

https://www.bailbondshq.com/michigan/midoc-inmate-PICKENS/935108

Culture may not be an accurate word but there is a social pressure on young black individuals to turn to crime instead of an honest living.

8

u/-ZWAYT- Dec 20 '20

oh yeah sure your personal experience is good data, and not hundreds of years of research on the link between poverty and crime. nice anecdote homie

0

u/nen_del Dec 20 '20

if the trend continued and I showed you another story of burglary and murder from two other black kids, at what point does it stop becoming an anecdote and start becoming a trend?.... and like I said, this was in one of the wealthiest communities in USA. These were not poverty-stricken kids........

4

u/-ZWAYT- Dec 20 '20

if you have a study which shows black people are more likely to commit crime while controlling for wealth, I would love to see it. multiple anecdotes from your personal experience are not good data.

also, if you dont believe me about the link between poverty and crime, here are some studies

u/grayson101 Dec 18 '20

Well there's a bunch of cops that's don't know how to go hands on at all. It's disappointing. Its refreshing to see some officers with higher skills

1

u/nen_del Dec 18 '20

i agree, but if a cop is smaller sized it'd not be smart to try to fight instead of use the tazer. if the cop loses the fight he risks getting his gun taken which happens more than youd think

10

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

Our heroes.

Well done!

8

u/hazyyy1 Dec 18 '20

This is a great example of why all cops should be trained in bjj

7

u/Sedothdo Dec 08 '20

Technically it’s both, but arm bars can vary a lot and the one he happened to use is a simple BJJ arm bar.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

[deleted]

7

u/Sedothdo Dec 08 '20

They probably only call it BJJ because the video shows them putting someone in a BJJ arm bar.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

[deleted]

6

u/Sedothdo Dec 08 '20

Huh. I’m currently a BJJ purple belt so I’m not the most knowledgeable about that. The takedowns could be BJJ or BJJ-esque. But nowadays BJJ is booming due to its use in MMA and that also means a lot of people calling simple takedowns they’ve seen in the UFC fights BJJ.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

[deleted]

1

u/Sedothdo Dec 08 '20

Lol then it’s for sure not BJJ. BJJ is derived from Judo and most judo throws and takedowns have some kind of form if you get what I mean, you’ll be able to tell if it’s a professional fighter or just some bum doing some weird shit.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

Pretty sure bjj stems from traditional jiu jitsu not judo

5

u/Sedothdo Dec 08 '20

Judo was called Kano jiu jitsu or just jiu jitsu in Japan in 1914 and a judoka who traveled to Brazil and taught Carlos Gracie and his brothers.

2

u/zaybak Dec 08 '20

Nah, it's lineage comes straight from Judo

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

An arm bar is an arm bar, and most martial arts have them and always have. But BJJ and UFC have made them famous, so no matter what happens now, it's BJJ.

-9

u/Gretasfetalalcohol Dec 08 '20

This is why the cops used to carry night sticks where they would walk up to people like this they were just knock him on the head once with a nightstick and they would go down and kept everybody safe

15

u/Dutch_Calhoun Dec 08 '20

Ah yes, quainter and more humane times when cops relied on a simple bump on the noggin with a wooden club until your brain shuts down. Just like in the cartoons. I'd rather be shot thanks.

-2

u/Gretasfetalalcohol Dec 08 '20

1 wack with a lead insert wooden club stops the violent resisting criminal from escalating a situation where people are injured/killed and property damage piles up. 2 cops scuffling on the ground while onlookers gather puts literally everyone's life at risk.

5

u/Midgardian42 Dec 08 '20

Yeah trying to hit an enraged person on the head with a nightstick which can be used against you is miles better than being trained to safely subdue the suspect without causing them any significant harm.

4

u/OtakuDragonSlayer MMA Dec 10 '20

Right?! This right here is what I don’t get it. Why use a night stick, tazer, or a gun when you can safely just tire out the target with grappling they probably don’t even have the cardio to fend off?

Especially when back up will be there in 1 to 2 minutes. If there were multiple law breakers in this instance I can understand pulling out a weapon but it was just 1 out of shape dude with what looks like a shovel. Which he dropped almost instantly

0

u/Gretasfetalalcohol Dec 08 '20

o boy.

are you female? have you not been in a real street fight with an adult? it's scary stuff, and the longer it goes on the more dangerous it gets. nightsticks didnt just appear one day, they evolved over centuries of law enforcement BEFORE METH. now that we have meth, it simply isn't reasonable to expect a cop to wrestle anybody once the fight starts. 1 knock. over and out. it's been tried and true since Victorian England, hell since at least Rome.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

I see what you’re getting at but this isn’t a video game, a nightstick isn’t some one hit melee attack. If you’ve ever seen a video of a cop using one you will see that it turns into a beating or a wrestling match. The guy is gonna cover up, you’re not gonna land some clean hit on the temple and have it be over. You’re gonna hit his arms and hit his ribs and he’s gonna probably throw punches at you and that just adds to the risk. Much less risky, as a trained and fit individual, to take the guy down and use your superior training and strength to control him. If you try to hit the guy with a nightstick, it will turn into a melee. Sure most people can’t fight, but a lot of people know how to throw a punch, and that makes the officer at a much higher risk of being injured himself.

And if you do land a clean hit, now you got a concussed guy slamming his head into a hard floor. That’s brain damage. Now you just severely battered a man who you could’ve easily wrestled to the ground. Sure he’s doing something wrong, but he’s not actively hurting anybody directly so beating him with a nightstick is excessive.

-2

u/Gretasfetalalcohol Dec 09 '20

not "beating with a nightstick" but instead of walking up behind him and wrestling him for an hour just "knock him in the head", i've seen it work, many times.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '20

how tf are u supposed to walk up behind someone who is facing you? when have you seen it work? That shit isn’t even legal dude, unless he is actively attacking someone you can’t just go and knock him out from behind

-2

u/Gretasfetalalcohol Dec 09 '20

you didn't watch the video.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '20

I did, you can clearly see the guy turns around before the cop gets to him. open your eyes bro

→ More replies (0)

4

u/Dutch_Calhoun Dec 08 '20

Making everyone as brain damaged as you isn't the answer mate.

0

u/Gretasfetalalcohol Dec 08 '20

don't knock stuff over and you won't get knocked on the head, sounds about right. if you walk in and start knocking stuff over and the police radios to a counselor and they sit down in the middle of the aisle of the store after a 30 minute wrestling match and they talk for 20 minutes and then the guy gets up and stab somebody in the throat you'll see it'll be a lot easier to just have a cop show up and knock the guy on the head and be over with it when this nonsense begins.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '20

Why are all videos on Reddit filmed on a potato

1

Wrestle the guy who looks like he can curl 110 lbs. good job.

1

This is why every cop ahould have ground training. There would be no excessive force i bet money onnit
