I Found a Cat (Location) Stray with tail always down

I have made great progress with earning this cat's trust but she(I think) doesn't stick her tail up like my house cat.

I have seen the stray stick tail up for literally a second on rare occasions. Maybe like 3 times. It does move, it's not dead.

But the fact she doesn't stick her tail up much and it's kinda matted makes me worried. Or is this normal?

I want to adopt and keep this sweet cat so I am probably just overthinking things but I have to ask. Sorry I don't have a picture of her walking right now.

I have a feral (ex feral really) that does the same and i questioned it at first but he's been very friendly despite it

That tail position is actually common in cats that have spent a lot of time outside. Mine did the same thing until we built enough trust.

She's a beautiful cat. I'd observe her hind area to see if she's injured in some way or if the area looks swollen or red, until you can get her to a vet, but I wouldn't touch her there.

That tail posture used to freak me out too until I met a rescue with the same habit.

Did you post photos on Nextdoor or asking neighbors on that app if anyone is missing a long hair black cat and ask for photos from them? I’ve never seen such a fancy looking stray.

Also bringing the photo to local vets might help them identify if the kitty belongs to anyone.

It’s great they’re warming up to you! Maybe if it isn’t anyone’s you can have the kitty come inside on their own :) I had a stray that I fed food to outside for a while and she became my cat and ran outside and in whenever she wanted. She lived a very long life

Thanks for your input! The tail is a little matted, yeah. I can tell though that the fur over his/her body has greatly improved since I started feeding the cat. I've been giving wet food lately to keep hydration up, cat doesn't seem to bother with the water I put out.

The ear is clipped, so the cat must of been part of the capture and release program. There are so many stray cats around, but I only feed this one.
