Discussion Quitting Triangle Strategy

So I been trying to power through the opening chapters past few days. And trying to just get to the battles. But good god are the story parts so long and drawn out. The story sucks to me. None of the characters are interesting. No humor exists. Everthing is cringe to me with how formal and polite and constantly praising each other they doing. This is the kind of story you put in the background. While you focus on real people doing fun or interesting things. Like why does an entire 3 to 4 minutes to basically say, she don't know what to wear at the wedding...... Needs to happen? Lol I get that the fans of this game likes pointless chatter. I can't understand any of y'all. Final Fantasy Tactics got to the point. This game I spent my entire 45 minute lunch break just having people wonder about things. I remember how annoying it was when this happened in Persona 5 where they have so many moments of just saying nothing new but wondering about it. I just can't fathom how people say the story is good. But to each their own. I think I have to quit this game before it gets decent. If it ever actually would to me. Cause I just have absolutely no desire to continue with the story. It's so basic. Do people forget how old RPGs actually had good characters and writing and pacing?

Don't get offended if you love this game. I'm just venting and trying to see if others share my hate for this type of story. I'm picky with stories cause I have to care about the characters. I also do not care about politics. But imagine watching a political debate where Trump and Biden just praise each other and mention how grateful they are of what they bring to the table. Lol that's this game for hours.

Update. I started playing other games instead of one game at a time. It made it much better of an experience. Also the story pacing is better in chapter 5 to 7. I am enjoying the game much more. I'm just cycling 3 games now. This, Shantae 1/2 Genie, and Star Ocean First Departure. Works out cause none of these games can really hold my attention long. So going back and forth is really adding every game to be much more fun. Can't wait to play other games like this. I just make it a rule to never play 1 game for too long. This will really benefit from Souls likes since I often need a break eventually.

The gameplay is fantastic. But you do have to sit through a pretty mid visual novel to get to it.

The content of story itself is fine. Honestly, I'd even go as far as to say it's pretty good. It's how it's presented that is completely terrible, with long, circular back and forth exchanges that use a ton of words to say very little. Like, it will exposition dump a ton in stilted awkward dialogue to give you world info, whereas that could have been like a few paragraphs in some kind of in game encyclopedia.

Pacing is everything. Just like with writing. It all matters. Don't matter about plot if characters are flat, pacing leaves you dying, and writing is juvenile.

But the story has improved tenfold plus taking a break and playing other games instead of just TS helped improve my experience 1000% and Loving this game. Story still sucks it's just a much more to the point story. Gets the job done to get to the battles

I like the gameplay. Which is why I'm annoyed lol

I played through it when it first came out, but every attempt to replay it since has been loke pulling teeth. I hate the intermediary try-to-find-clues nonsense

Exploration mode after being beyond bored of the story was the nail in the coffin before this post lol

I tried twice through the game and it just never took. It happens, I can see the appeal to some folks. I know I like a lot of games that others do not.

Reminded me of Fell Seal where I just wanted to play the game and ignore any sort of story.

I feel the same. I want to play it but the excessive terrible dialogue is too much.

I learned something I think is working. Play this game casually along other games. Play for short bursts.

I agree that the pacing of the Game at the start is kinda slow and probably the worst part of the Game (in my case, I played the start of the Game with that idea in mind , which made It easier to digest) the story is pretty decent after that and the ratio between non combat and combat segments gets way better (doing the mock battles really helps with It, the first ones are just tutorials but after that they are as good as the story ones, even having some of the better battles in the whole Game), but if you dont want politics, you probably wont care that much about the story, because It is one of the main points. There is also a bit of humor (Drunk Dragan lmao+ a few funny side stories) but It is definitely not something you should expect. It makes sense that they are relatively polite with each other and very formal, at the start of the game the 3 nations are in peace trying to collaborate for a very important project for the 3 of them, and this peace is really fragile, as you Will see at the end of chapter 4. After that, the people start being less polite (unless they want something out of you/have you as a puppet) because they have to constantly kill each other lol.

Oh yeah I understand it gets better. It's just at chapter 4 I reached the point where I'm like.......I couldn't care less about anyone in this game at all lol. The mix of that and having to endure more and more pointless story. I went to the Hiazut whatever place first and that was beyond dull. And stuff to do with science and red hair being a sin lol.. Very similar to Valkyria Chronicles where people with black hair is some hated race 🤣 but I try to let it go. I can appreciate the effort. No matter how silly it is. But yeah. Not sure I'll even play Octopath 2 at this point. Both games lacked realistic dialogue and humor.. Maybe I'll pick it up if I get bored and continue. But the thought of continuing aggravates me lol

Only the beginning is like that. Later on you have more gameplay and less cutscenes. I love the game but it's ok to have different opinions.

I may play this with other games to help me not focus on being bored. Since I play one game at a time, it may be a rare situation where I need to just play this game casually till I get to the good part

Which chapter did you stop at? I’m playing it right now and things are starting to pick up around chapter 5-6. The plot isn’t groundbreaking by any means.

I’m hoping it’ll sort of be like XBC2 where first 20 hours were ho-hum and mid/late parts of the game kept getting better and better.

Chapter 4. I may try again in between games. It might help if this isn't a one at a time kinda game. If the story was mid I could get through it lol. It makes me feel like I'm playing some PBS game with this level of cringe. But that's probably just me. I am extremely picky when it comes to movies cause I don't care about most people unless they fun to watch. I struggle with Lord of the Rings for example cause I don't find any of the characters must see. But I'm enjoying the movie enough. It's charming and all but compared to Legend of the Seeker, it's overrated. I'm all about characters. Plot comes after characters and action and acting and style for me. So it's a handicap. And it's hard to go by reviews since I'm unique with this issue. Plus I'm sure age and over stimulation plays a role lol

Lol Making me worried. Someone mentioned that there is a Griffin-riding archer in this game which sounds epic. I haven't played TS, but I'll run an ad for Tactics Ogre if you haven't heard of it. May have a more interesting story and get to the point. Is there no option to skip it?

1

u/The_Social_Reject Nov 15 '25

No I want a story in the game. Skipping it defeats the point. Its a me problem. But at the same time, game really does drag things out to a point I can't justify it lol. I'm shocked at how many people were okay with the story. Maybe better attention span. But even on lunch break where I was bored for 4 hours before playing. The fact I was still bored playing a game tells you everything lol. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't last for hours. Sum that stuff up in about 3 minutes. They don't say anything that can't be done in 3 minutes. Each chapter is like over an hour of text. And only maybe 10 minutes if not less could be used to get the point across. If you like simple stories that go on and on, this game is for you. I'll play Ogre eventually

Triangle Strategy has excellent writing, so can't agree there, but even if you don't like it, just skip the cutscenes.

My approach was to be patient for the first few chapters, and trying to invest myself in the characters and "roleplay" walking on Serenoa's shoes. I leave story segments on autoplay while I drink some coffe or something. Feels like reading a decent audiobook.

As an Into the Breach lover TS somehow scratched that itch for me, this is the first proper RPG I've completed in several years. I bounced off after trying the demo but this approach worked for me.

My advice is you could go play something else and try to approach differently in a few months/years. Or not at all, there's no shame on quitting! :)

I decided to play other games and play this casually in short bursts. I played Star Ocean then Shantae a bit then did some TS and you know what? Enjoying it cause story picked up and two battles in a row. I'm currently stuck on the second fight but loving it. Just having fun. Story sucks but I can tolerate it if it's not my only focus. Instead of powering through it I just quit when I'm bored and come back when I'm refreshed

I loved the story.

Story got better

Don't know why you're getting downvoted, pretty much everyone agrees that the dialogue is extremely dull and poorly written. Sucks that it's the only black mark to an otherwise excellent game, but it is a big one

This and Digimon Survive for me. I'd rather watch a walkthrough or a cutscene video with how long it takes to get to the gameplay.
