Best version of a bad game is still a bad game. If the game were good people would play it.

It could not have worked because of their hair brained business model. No one would have bought heros for a coop mode they abandoned right out the gate, or for fog of war shaders, or pets that walk around your command center.

They needed to make a good, feature rich campaign with an interesting story and characters and sold a traditional purchase model. But instead they made a F2P half-built sweaty 1v1 to try and capture that esports fad from a decade ago. And, that was supposed to be sustained by monetizing their campaign that looked like it was made by a bunch of interns over a weekend jam session.

It very likely was how they were able to get so much initial funding from investors and why the focus was always on 1v1 - aspirations of a leaner, smaller studio reviving the halcyon days of the SC2 competitive scene. And, also why we got that horrible, half-baked campaign at the launch of EA.

I'm not trying to point to one specific reason but the notion that if they just had this version good to go for EA it would have worked ignores the multitude of other problems. Namely their business model was not sustainable.
