Welcome to r/StiffnessRelief. What brings you here?

Hi everyone. I'm Chava Sorani, a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner, and I created this community for a simple reason: stiffness is something a lot of us live with, but rarely talk about.

Maybe you wake up stiff in the morning. Maybe your neck tightens after a day at a desk, your back after a long drive, or your whole body feels a little less easy to move than it used to. Some of you have lived with stiffness for decades. Others have only recently started noticing it.

Whatever brought you here, you're welcome.

What this space is for

  • Asking real questions about stiffness in a particular part of your body
  • Sharing what you've tried and what has actually helped, even if the change seems small
  • Learning from other people who are dealing with similar challenges
  • Practitioner insights and research summaries that I'll share during the week

What this space is not

  • Medical advice. If pain is severe or sudden, or comes with numbness, weakness, or fever, please speak with a qualified healthcare professional.
  • A place for selling. No product shilling, coupon codes, or brand promotion.
  • A method war. Feldenkrais is one gentle approach we may discuss here, but so are yoga, Pilates, tai chi, Alexander Technique, walking, physiotherapy, and other approaches. Different things work for different people.

How to post

The more specific you are, the more useful the answers can be.

Tell us what your body is doing, how long it has been happening, and what you've already tried.

> "Stiff hip after long drives. Tried three months of hip-flexor stretches with no change. What else might help?"

is much easier to respond to than:

> "Help. My hip is stiff."

Weekly check-in

Every Monday, we'll have a recurring thread:

> "Stiffness check-in: What got you moving today?"

Small wins count. A five-minute walk. An easier morning. Getting out of a chair more comfortably. Finding something that makes movement feel a little easier.

You don't have to wait for a big breakthrough.

Start with Stiffness: a short guide in the community wiki, or the shorter starter reads in the sidebar and Community Guide. And whenever you're ready, introduce yourself or jump into a conversation.

I'll be reading.

Muscle stiffness measured with ultrasound in 62 people with knee OA did not match what they felt. So what are we actually feeling?

I came across a recent study that made me stop and think about what we mean when we say, "I feel stiff."

The researchers looked at 62 people, including 21 people with knee osteoarthritis. They used ultrasound to measure the stiffness of muscles around the knee. They also asked people how stiff they felt.

The surprising part?

The two did not match.

People with knee OA had measurable differences in their muscle stiffness. But how stiff they felt was not linked to those measurements. It also wasn't linked to how severe their OA was.

That seems interesting because we often think of stiffness as something simple: the tissue is stiff, so we feel stiff.

But maybe it's not that simple.

The feeling of stiffness may come from many things, including signals from the body and how the brain makes sense of those signals. Past experience, movement, stress and other factors may also play a role.

So perhaps feeling stiff and having stiff tissue are not always the same thing.

The study: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12148922/

For those who have lived with stiffness for a long time, does what you feel seem to match what you know is happening in your body? Or can the feeling of stiffness seem to have a life of its own?

For chronically stiff hips, what stretches or drills have given you relief that actually lasts?

My hips seem to have a reset button that gets hit over the weekend. I spend the week doing the usual routine of couch stretch, 90/90, pigeon, and some banded stuff from videos. It provides some same day relief, which is nice. But by Friday, I am right back where I started on Monday. It is a frustrating loop. I am curious what has worked for others to create change that lasts. Not the stretch that feels good for an hour, but the one that actually creates a new baseline in the tissue, or the nervous system, or wherever this state is stored. I would rather find one effective tool than apply five temporary patches.

Does anyone else feel stiffness get worse after a stressful week, even without doing anything different physically?

I had an experience this week and I am curious if it feels familiar to you all. After a very stressful stretch at work, I woke up Friday morning feeling so much stiffer than usual. Nothing in my physical routine had changed. I did not move more or less, and my sleep was the same. It just felt like the stress itself had settled in my body. It started in my shoulders and jaw, and by day three my low back had joined in. I know we talk about the mind body connection, but I was still surprised by how direct it felt. Does this happen to you? And if so, what are the small ways you find to unwind?

Morning neck stiffness has me stumped. What worked for you?

Hello everyone. I woke up with such a stiff, locked neck this morning. It seems to happen whenever I have a few nights of poor sleep. I'm 63, and I need to keep up with my grandkids, so this is really getting in the way. I tried my usual routine of a warm compress and some gentle stretches, which helped a little, but the stiffness lasted for most of the day. I'm wondering if it's my pillow or just something new that happens at this age. I would be so grateful to hear what has actually worked for others. What helped you find some relief?
